Is economics any good in Carnegie Mellon?
I think its computer science and engineering overshadow all other majors except for business…
I’m thinking of transferring right away to business if I find out economics in CMU isn’t that good…
Thanks!

Econ is fine at CMU. Econ vs business (at CMU) should come down to other factors (e.g. desire for economic theory vs practical business fundamentals, grad school plans, career goals, etc.).
@Dunboyne Would changing to business major give me an advantage for Grad? I was thinking of Econ since doing business at undergrad and going to MBA would be redundant…
Economics at CMU is one of the more math-heavy economics departments – multivariable calculus is a prerequisite for the intermediate economics and econometrics courses (and actually most junior/senior level courses). This is good if you want to go on to PhD study in economics (though additional advanced math is also advised for that path). But it may be more math than most business majors are willing to take. However, business majors at CMU must take the same intermediate economics courses and multivariable calculus.
What do you mean by “advantage”? Business won’t offer any advantage in getting admitted to a higher ranked grad program unless you can pull off a significantly higher GPA, which would be a dubious reason to switch. If you want an MBA, yes, there will be more redundancy in the BS Business Admin. Econ also prepares you well for an MA Econ, and like ucb suggested, the BS Econ or BS Econ w Math or Stats sets you up well for the more quantitative grad programs (MFE or PhD). And if you ever want to do a 180 and try for law school, econ is arguably better preparation for the LSAT because of its focus on quantitative/abstract reasoning. So economics – especially with the quantitative focus at CMU – will provide you with very good options.
Hey guys I have a similar question as the one posted above.
In terms of prestige and job opportunities, would Econ be on par with Tepper Business?
I heard Econs are also part of Tepper but just feel like it’s not prestigious since anyone from Dietrich can declare as econ…
