Which among HYPS, has the best economics program and the best job placement?

They are equal. And do not forget MIT. MIT is right up there too.

Or Stanford and Chicago. Dont follow the rankings. There is minimal difference between the economics programs at any of the top schools.

yeah, Alexadre is spot-on. Enroll in H and take your econ classes at MIT (#1 program)!

Stanford's econ program is considered by many the best in HYPSM.

The top four economics programs are, in no particular order, Stanford Harvard MIT & Chicago.

Why take econ classes at MIT if Harvard's econ department is ranked #1 by some, unless you want a thorough emphasis in statistics, modeling/game theory and econometrics? Even then, the difference is miniscule.

You missed Princeton...

generally the top programs in economics are Princeton, University of Chicago, Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. These 5 are the power-houses of economics for undergraduate =P

in graduate school:

USNEWS Grad Econ:
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology 5.0
University of Chicago 5.0
3. Harvard University (MA) 4.9
Princeton University (NJ) 4.9
Stanford University (CA) 4.9
University of CaliforniaBerkeley 4.9

zephyr:

Harvard's econ program is ranked #1 by no one...sorry

Yale has a slightly worse economics program than the rest of HYPSM.

Yale isn't weaker than the others at the undergraduate level. Hell, I would say that at the undergraduate level, any of the top 20 programs...and any of the top LACs would be equally good. But if I have my choice, my top choices for econ would be Chicago, MIT, Princeton and Stanford.

To hell with econ...business at the big-W (WHARTON WOOOHOO!) is where its at!

Just kidding guys, to each his own. But, I totally agree that regardless of which of the above mentioned colleges you attend you'll go places. They'll all get you that all important interview. After that, its purely up to you.

Chicago is famous for Econ, isn't it? They have a crazy number of Nobel Prize winners in Econ teaching at that school.

Yup thats right...max econ nobel laureates i believe..

bluebayou: USNEWS rankings are BS and you know it. You can't mess with Harvard economics.

Chicago also has a massive graduate focus and you won't get much nobel-laureate attention.

Zephyr, I have no idea who told you Chicago was graduate school focused. It isn't. In fact, most Econ programs are undergraduate focused. I know a few people who studied at Chicago and they were taught by some of the best Economics professors in the World. Harvard is obviously amazing in Economics, but I would not go as far as saying it is better than Chicago.

Sorry for asking this, but what does HYPS stand for?

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford

Columbia also has a very solid economics program for undergraduates. Don't forget to put that in there as well.

Again, it's hard to measure economics quality, especially at the graduate level. Chicago's heyday according to many was decades ago during the zenith of the "Chicago school." Others disagree.

The fact of the matter is, Harvard's economics program is one of the best, if not THE best in the country. Stanford's, MIT's and Chicago's are definitely in the top four.
