I have heard overall that Economics is a solid major, but I was wondering how pairing it up with international relations could lead to an interesting career in either the business world, public service, or really anything else. I have heard very mixed things about international relations by itself as a major, so I am wondering if the double major would stand out enough to get me anywhere career-wise. I am very interested in both econ and IR, but I wouldn’t want to waste time on an IR major if it wouldn’t get me anywhere.
How schools do IR varies. At some, you might be required to take 4 or 5 econ classes to complete the major but you might also have so many other requirements that adding another major, even one like economics, might be impossible. Economics provides an interesting framework for assessing the world, but imo, it helps to know what you are assessing and why.
I’d encourage you to think about what interests you and why and then figure out what course of study works best. Maybe it’s econ and a FL. Maybe it’s some kind of regional studies. But speaking for myself, I wouldn’t see an IR major or an econ major all that differently in general if I were hiring. If I were looking for fluency in a language or quantitative skills, I probably wouldn’t care so much what the major was, just that you had them.
It doesn’t actally come across that you are genuinely interested in IR so I suspect there’s a better path for you.
