Economics Majors at Rochester

Hey everyone,

I am accepted as a Economics student at Rochester this year!
I would like to know more details about this major at Rochester. For example, How do people evaluate it ? Which chances student could get after graduation? How about its job prospect? How can I prepare for the Rochester's life ?:)

Thanks for any response and suggestion.

You will help me a lot.

Hey Colin.C, congrats on your acceptance!

The economics program at Rochester is very good, and ranks high among the top economics programs in the country. I am a rising sophomore majoring in Financial Economics, and my experience as an economics major overall has been great so far.

There are three different majors offered: Economics, Financial Economics, and Economics & Business Strategies. You have the option to major in one of these with honors. You can look at the differences between the curricula on the course website.

As for oppertunities after graduation, do you want to go to grad school, or getting a job in banking, consulting, etc?

If you want to go to grad school, the economics program will give you a solid base. I recommend that you pursue the honors major, since it will give you a taste of graduate economics. This involves taking honors versions of intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, which are math-heavy and considerably more challenging than their regular counterparts, but definitely doable.

As for banking/consulting/trading, etc. the job prospects are not looking that great because of the financial crisis, even for target schools. But don’t let that hold you back. Many alums in the past have worked in bulge braket firms, and I know plenty of people who have/currently are interning at Bulge Bracket firms. There are also many alumni in these firms that you can get in touch with and get help from. The finance and economics council holds several presentations throughout the year where you can learn amore about finance and other industries. In addition, there is a networking night for students interested in finance/Wall Street, which I found to be very, very helpful and informative.

This local guy went to UR for econ and I just read about him getting some doctorate and prestigious international post.

Take Landsburg for 108 - hes amazing, he only teaches it one semester during the year, so make sure you get it

yeah, the biggest plus of UR econ is Landsburg … take his 108 (intro) and 207. you can also buy his books on amazon before you come to the school so you can have a better understanding of this professor’s thinking (sometimes weird, unconventional).
