Hey Colin.C, congrats on your acceptance!

The economics program at Rochester is very good, and ranks high among the top economics programs in the country. I am a rising sophomore majoring in Financial Economics, and my experience as an economics major overall has been great so far.

There are three different majors offered: Economics, Financial Economics, and Economics & Business Strategies. You have the option to major in one of these with honors. You can look at the differences between the curricula on the course website.

As for oppertunities after graduation, do you want to go to grad school, or getting a job in banking, consulting, etc?

If you want to go to grad school, the economics program will give you a solid base. I recommend that you pursue the honors major, since it will give you a taste of graduate economics. This involves taking honors versions of intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, which are math-heavy and considerably more challenging than their regular counterparts, but definitely doable.

As for banking/consulting/trading, etc. the job prospects are not looking that great because of the financial crisis, even for target schools. But don’t let that hold you back. Many alums in the past have worked in bulge braket firms, and I know plenty of people who have/currently are interning at Bulge Bracket firms. There are also many alumni in these firms that you can get in touch with and get help from. The finance and economics council holds several presentations throughout the year where you can learn amore about finance and other industries. In addition, there is a networking night for students interested in finance/Wall Street, which I found to be very, very helpful and informative.
