Economics Majors - Take Stats 350 or ECON 404 or 405?

I just wanted to know what your thoughts on this matter are. I have already taken two Statistics courses at my previous university, which entails the basic topics of statistics using MiniTab.

I am in the spring half term right now, and also taking ECON 401. Would taking Calculus II with ECON 401 too much to handle if I replace STATS 350?

Thanks in advance.

stats 350 doesnt count toward your econ major

stats 350 does not count toward your econ major, it is also the biggest joke. If you just want to learn about stats, take stats 265, which is offered through the IOE department (IOE 265 and stats 265 are the same course). You learn about the same topic plus a couple and go much more in depth.

p.s source: my friend is a grader for 350

Thanks for the replies, it actually clears up a lot. Bearcats, thanks for the info on the IOE stats class, I looked into it. I have decided that I will take either of the two Econ statistics courses, since it might be more relevant in my case.

cheers!

350 CAN count towards your major. If you take 350 as opposed to Econ 404, 405, or Stats 426, your elective requirement increases from 15 to 18.

With that said, if you are quantitative and like math, I wouldn’t suggest doing 350 for your stats requirement. I would recommend taking Calc II and then Econ 405 (if not Calc II, III Stats 425, and finally Stats 426, if you are really quantitative).

Yay! I’m glad STATS 350 is a joke. I’ve been looking for a super easy class. Sorry to hijack your thread, OP, but would you think it is WAY to easy if I got a 5 on AP Stats exam with hardly any effort. What is the course load like? I’m worried that if I make the Varsity Track team, I will struggle. Also, its Natural Science credits and I hate science (other than Physics).

You’ll get an A+ in 350 if you’ve taken AP Stats. Natural science isn’t mad at Michgan. You can take some cool, easy GeoSci, Environ, or Astronomy classes to knock it out if you’re not a big science person.

Rather than taking Stats 350, I would just skip to Math/Stats 425 if you took AP Stats. Its not too much harder but does require Calc III.

Yeah. I planned on taking Calc III this summer, but I’m taking it this fall. Both Calc III and Math 425 are required for my major. I just wanted a super easy class that will knock out some distribution credits. But you got me thinking… maybe it will be TOO easy. Plus that will be my 3rd math class. But the other option seems too hard to be paired with Calc III and Varsity Track, what do you think?

MATH 215 - Calculus III
MATH 217 - Linear Algebra (took, but didn’t transfer; should be pretty easy)
ENGLISH 125 - College Writing
Last Class: STATS 350 (super easy) or EECS 183 - Elementary Programming Concepts (hard, prereq. for major) or some other random dist. requirement…

OP, sorry for taking over…

215 is a prereq to 217. Not sure if it’s enforced, though. I would take EECS. For your stats class, take 426 after 425, or just do Econ 405.

Well, since I know all of this… Now my schedule sounds like it would be either super easy or really hard.

So… If I took Calc III, Linear Algebra, FYWriting, and EECS 183 does that sound too hard? Sounds like it will be hard especially for my first year in D1 athletics.

Instead of replacing that fourth class with STATS 350, are there any other NS or Humanities credits you recommend? (Just not SS, too many already with Econ 101 & 102 plus).

Just wanted to chime in and say that you can take Linear Alg w/o Calc III (Multivariable calculus) before hand. In fact, you could probably take Lin Alg w/o knowing any calc at all. However, you need to take both calc III and Lin Alg before taking Differential equations/calc IV, so if you plan on heading in that direction, it seems like a good idea to get both of those out of the way.
