Economics @ McGill?

Hey,

I'm looking for an university as an undergraduate student, and would like to know how is the economics program at McGill? I've seen that it is ranked 17th by QS...

Thanks

Rankings mislead and its 17 mostly because of its programs in Law/Medicine.

Rankings can indeed be misleading if one doesn’t know how to read them correctly, but (1) QS has a specific ranking for Economics and Econometrics programs, on which McGill also happened to place 17th in 2011 (it has apparently tumbled in the just-released 2012 rankings due to the high degree of variance in year-to-year rankings; one of those misleading aspects mentioned above) and (2) McGill legitimately has a strong economics department, and is only rivalled in Canada by UBC or UoT.

Just noticed, hes right. It fell from 17 to like 49. Quite suprising since I assume nothing has changed in a year. Even cambridge dropped to like 12 from I think 1 or 2 so it varies alot apparantly.

Thanks for your answer. What should we think about it? I’ve heard that Desautels is not well ranked and appreciated… Is it the same for economics, considering its fall to the ~49th place?

Economics =/= Management.

And to reiterate: rankings suffer from large year-to-year variations. We can’t stop you from making school decisions based on a temporary snapshot.

Thanks for your answer. Does the economics department suffer of the same “bad/average” Desaultels reputation? How is it compared to the University of Warwick, for example.

I honestly dont think anyone here has enough experience to answer that especially since Warwick is in the UK. At most people would be able to compare it to universities in the U.S. But yeah like it was pointed out earlier only UBC and UofT rival it in Canada.
