Economics or International Business

I will be attending the University of South Carolina at Columbia next year and I'm torn between two majors, Economics and International Business. I want to do something involved in investing or banking so I feel that Econ would be a better choice but I'm not entirely sure. I also would like to minor in something, any ideas?

All advice and comments are welcome.

Thanks

I am going to attend University of South Carolina fall of 2012 as well! And I also want to work in investment banking, so I’m planning on majoring in finance and minoring in economics. (Best bet for investment banking industry). It also looks like USC has some good clubs for this, so I’m excited to start.

You could double major? I’m thinking about doing finance and economics, finance goes deeper into the investment/banking part.

I would most definitely double major if you plan on doing international business. International business is more of a complimentary major rather than a primary major with regards to beginning your career after college.

If you want to be an investment banker, then the obvious choice would be finance major with an accounting minor/concentration. The reality, today, is that if you aren’t gaining an international perspective in your management/business classes, then your professor/school is completely unaware of the business climate today.

International business major/area of study is essentially these components:

A.) Normal management courses (finance, accounting, marketing)
B.) Language requirement
C.) Heavy emphasis on studying abroad at every chance possible
D.) Some management courses with an international emphasis (international marketing, international finance, etc.)

Basically, the international business major, in my opinion, is way overhyped. By itself, it offers no real advantage except for having learned a language and maybe the study abroad experiences gained. These two advantages, however, can be gained without taking the otherwise unimpressive major.

^^^ I agree with trizz75. Any degree with the word “business” in it is IMO less marketable.
Mastering a second language is much better.

If you go to university of south carolina, I wouldn’t set your heart on investment banking.

If anything you should set your heart on investment banking, since your going to have to work alot harder coming from a non-target.
