How hard is econ 3190 and what prep do you need for the class?

Econ 3190 is probably one of the harder required courses for the econ major, along with Econ 3200. The exact difficulty will depend on the professor you would end up taking it with.

In terms of prep, I think it lists Econ 1110/1120 and Math 1110 and 1120 as prerequisites. The course is basically a math course and doesn’t incorporate much, if any, economics content. When I took it there was some need to use calculus, but not too much. However, despite the lack of calculus, there was still a lot of difficult math content relating to complex probability and statistical concepts.

If you’re not into math or not looking to go to grad school, you might want to consider taking Econ 3210 instead. It’s an easier option that combines the content of 3190 and 3200.

Hard for an econ class. Not too much of a challenge overall. Some multivariable calculus would help, but other than that, you just need some aptitude for quantitative thinking.
