Economics transfer would like advice.

Hey Guys, probably get a lot of this. I am thinking of transferring to many top economics universities like UChicago, Northwestern, Duke, Columbia etc. I need some advice about ECs. Here's some background info:

Freshmen at UIUC
GPA: 4.0
HS GPA: 1.9 (yeah..)

Interned at Grant Thornton
Interned at Consultancy Company
Assistant editor at a Research Institute in Asia (Took a year off)

SAT : 2010 (retaking it).
ECs freshmen 1st semester:

Tae Kwon Do club

Independent research with a few professors.

Next semester I am going to get a lot more involved with clubs and tone down my research (most of the projects will end by January). Am I overloading my ECs with too much research?

You’ll probably want to wait a year to show good grades in high school that can overshadow your bad HS grades. None of those schools accept more than 1/10 transfers that applies. The people getting in have great college grades as well as HS grades most of the time.

I was really looking for advice towards my ECs, but thank you.

How did you get into UIUC with a 1.9?

2010 on SAT, killer reqs and an ability to talk myself out of a burning barn ;)

Impressive but it still doesn’t add up. Oh well. I would apply for 2011. One year of work following a GPA of 1.9 and 2010 SATs (while good, they aren’t out of this world) isn’t going to look super strong.

I have an easy 3.8+ with great recommendations from all my profs for the fall of 2009.

Congratulations. You’re missing my point. If you apply next year adcoms will barely take your HS record into account when making their decisions. The schools you want to apply to are some of the best in the country. Their transfer rates (for the most part) are lower than their already low freshman admission rates. Apply if you want, but I would suggest applying for junior transfer or spring sophomore transfer. If you apply for next year, adcoms will see your 1.9, your SAT score (which while excellent, isn’t exactly shooting the lights out at these schools), and ONE semester of quality work. Waiting until next year to apply allows you time to build the foundation needed to make up for that 1.9.

i agree with knights. your high school is too weak for them to forgive after one extremely strong semester. if you apply coming in as a junior, you’ll have 3 semesters to show them of solid work and you’ll be able to build up your ECs.

You must have been a clout scandal kid to have gotten in UIUC (and its business program at that!) with a 1.9 HS GPA,lol

I did take a year off and worked at a research institute. While I don’t have grades, I can get recommendations from people who graduated from a lot of those schools economics graduate programs.

kdm as someone who was accepted as a transfer to Northwestern from a CC, I agree with what others have said and I highly recommend that you do apply next year. Your ECs are great. And your college GPA is strong. Unfortunately your HS GPA is weak. Although it is true that adcoms *might/I not consider it if you apply now, the fact is, they will most certainly give your HS record virtually zero weight if you apply next year. This could increase your chances exponentially.

If you really want to transfer to those fine institutions it would be in your best interest to apply next year.
