Economics vs Accounting vs Finance

I’m currently an economics major, but want to transfer into the business school at my university for either finance or accounting. If I decide to go with accounting, I will probably be a year or a year and a half behind compared to just a semester or possibly 2 with finance. My career goals are not in either finance or accounting specifically, but in upper level management (hopefully for a logistics or transportation firm, but that’s flexible). Unfortunately, my university does not offer supply chain management or logistics as a major or I would go with that program. Should I stick with economics or transfer to the business school and do either accounting or finance?

If I were to go with accounting, I would probably only want to spend a few years in an accounting job. I want to make a good salary with a lot of potential for promotion, but I don’t want to be stuck in accounting for my whole life because I think I will be very dissatisfied with it.

I don’t mind spending extra time in college if it’s the best for my career and what I want to do with my life, so don’t think too much about how much time it would take unless two of the options are almost identical in the opportunities they provide.

One thing I would do is to go down to your college’s campus recruitment office and try to find out what employers recruit at your college and what they’re looking for in terms of major as well as what they’re offering in terms of job shadowing, internships, and other work experience that you get while in college. It sounds like you actually prefer economics and aren’t specifically interested in a job in an accounting/finance function; if that’s the case, I wouldn’t rush to leave econ behind unless you know that it will hold you back from your career goals. Accounting and finance are challenging majors and it can be hard to endure them if you already know up front that you don’t have any interest.
