Econ is my passion. However, my parents want me to study engineering because I am too smart to study Econ. I can't make the decesion. I feel following what my heart want will make me regret not listening to my parents.

Please give me your advice.

Too smart to study economics? Economics is more than just about the laws of supply and demand, if they think that’s what its all about. Everybody’s parents thinks their child is too smart for something, but in reality that’s simply not true. I’m sure that you may be smart, but you might not have the skill sets for engineering. Are you prepared for the math courses all the way up to differential equations or even PDE(Partial Differential Equations) Are you ready to take on a 18-20 credit course load(at my skill, they almost make you take that much) If it’s about money, Economics majors can command a lot of money. I’m doing finance/economics and am pretty much set in terms of job prospects.

Economics:
This is definitely a strong path if you go to a good school and maybe pick up a double major or minor in something related like finance.
Too smart to study econ? Well, that might make that much better at econ compared to the rest of the student pool.
It’s a lot more than just definitions and trends and reading graphs, it’s about predicting too. Numbers spell out more words than letters do in econ.
A lot of less intelligent would major in econ over engineering, which may be what your parents are thinking about.
In my opinion, i feel econ majors are more proactive, social, math AND writing/reading strong.

Engineering:
can’t go wrong with it
math/science strong
don’t let the fact that engineers have a great job aspect convince you its the right career for you
i know many engineering majors who end up getting an MBA instead of masters in engineering
Many consulting/financial firms and businesses will hire engineers over business degrees because of the skills that engineers acquire throughout their college career
nobody will ever say engineering was easy, some may say econ was

I’m personally going to college for Business Administration/Finance and get my minor in engineering. If i were in your position, i would choose econ. but that’s because i love econ and hate physics.

Economics will make you a more diverse candidate for jobs and employers love to see that.
It depends on two things:
- Where you want to work
- Which major you find more interesting, which is apparently econ
Note that if you pursue economics for more than just business (as in grad school), you will need A LOT of math…basically a double major. If you want to be an economist, double major in math/stat. If you want to work in business and get an MBA, double major in math/stat anyway. It goes great with economics and will set you up for A LOT of job opportunities in statistics, economics, business, etc. If your parents don’t think that economics is less intelligent then they don’t know what they are talking about.
Several econ majors in my family…one was the Exec. Treasurer at UTC and didn’t get his MBA till he was 35 (focused electives in finance).
In short, do economics because you love it and it will take you wherever you want to go.
