Hi, I am considering majoring in Economics and UMich and was just wondering, how hard is it to get a high GPA in economics classes? And how much math is involved in UM economics classes, like do you have to use calculus for most of economics courses?

Calculus I is a minimum prerequisite. But Calc II is needed if you’re interested in classes like econometrics and such. If you’re strong in math and do the required readings, you’ll be fine =)

You can get away with barely any math and stats to major in econ. You can get away with just Calc I and Stats 350 (intro stats) and be able to major. Umich econ does not require much math. However, if you’re considering grad school at all, you should probably take the calc sequence, linear algebra, real analysis, and econometrics at least. It isn’t too hard to get a high gpa is you put in the work.

Economics can be as challenging (or as easy) as you wish it to be. You can take a bunch of quantitative courses, including some graduate-level classes, if you so wish. Or, you can simply coast and take a bunch of easy classes. Overall, Economics is not as difficult a major as Engineering, Mathematics or Physics, but it can be challenging if one so wishes.
