What do people think about economics at UT? Is it a large major and how do people see it?

Is it hard? I've heard economics can be extremely difficult but I know it definitely depends on the university and teacher.

Do you think similar jobs would be available to an economics major as those available to business majors? If not what jobs are typically filled by economics majors?

For an MBA would economics be a good undergrad? Or would business be better? Or does it not really matter?

Sorry with all the questions! Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

economics majors can go on to do just about anything…it’s a good degree…definitely more respected than business (though maybe not at UT since mccombs is ranked higher) b/c econ is a tougher major than business…

you should take intro to macro/micro and see how well you do…although intro courses do tend to be weedout…

econ majors can get the same jobs (ibanking, consulting, etc) business majors can (except maybe accounting jobs) you just need to have a great GPA b/c business majors will probably have a higher gpa…and i’m sure at UT there are firms that recruit only at the business school…

econ would be good for an MBA but an MBA is not always required for a job.

I’m actually having a similar dilemma except between government and economics. I’m not sure which I enjoy more, but I have heard that Econ majors have a significantly larger amount of work, so I’m going to take some introductory economics classes to gauge what I think of economics as a major.

Econ is serious at UT. Not a watered-down business type of major. The econ theory classes are the weed-out classes. If you can make it through the second-year theory classes, you will be fine. (If you have a lot of trouble with multivariate calculus, you should probably hang it up.)
