EconomicsVs. Computer Science Vs. Graphic Design

Hi im applying to university really soon now and i suddenly dont know what i want to study! During Junior Year year I had it set in my mind that i would study computer science, but the more i think about ti im not sure that a major of continous computing theory, algorithms and systems management is ideal for me. I've already applied to the UK for computer science courses, Im now deciding whether i should do the same with US or think about this more.

Here's the thing:
I know computer science is a promising field with lots of opportunities. Pay possibilities seem to be looking good from forecasts( Pay is a very important factor to me). But i cant see me being able to keep myself interested in this field of study too long before i either lose all interest or end up dropping the subject. I think in all honesty i really opted for this subject because i knew id learn programming, so i thought i could use that later to design websites(something i found interesting as a degree) while making a good salary from a compsci degree.

Disadvantages:
-Lot of logical math and theory work in this course( Im good at math but I dont know if i'll be able to handle endless lectures on computing theories and all the technical aspects on computer science.)

Now with economics, I could see myself being more comfortable in that field. I find market evaluation interesting, I study A level business and economics so I have a good picture of what the subject is like, unlike with computer science. I have done quite a share of extra curriculars that would easily demonstrate an aptitude for economics. I love analysing the market. I can earn quite a high salary with a degree in this field. But most of all, I think i can excel in this field.

Disadvantages: Again, I can never be sure whether I'll be able to enjoy the jobs that come with this degree(perhaps the economics major is very interesting to learn but im not sure if the jobs it leads to may be the same)

Finally graphic design: This is by far my passion. I love designing( I love doing graphic design art on photoshop, creating advert ideas in my free time, im a skilled artist[Both drawing and painting) and I really hope to run a business in this field one day. I actually have a lot of work experience in this field as well as extra curriculars as i enjoyed participating in media related clubs at school.

Disadvantages: PAY. As i said before, pay is very important to me. I know many graphic designers who all say the same thing: The pay is terrible. Employment in this field is also difficult due to so much competition, and the work hours can be very overstretched. Plus, there is not really much possibility of promotions or salary rises occuring in this field.

I know people are going to say follow your passion as thats what matters most. Yet, money and success are huge criterias for whether i will be content with my choice or not. Please give me your input so i can make this decision more easily.

Search Computational Media here in CC and you’ll find a discussion of a degree that seems to combine graphic design and computer science. It will bring up the degree offered by Georgia Tech, but I would think other schools would have similar programs. Maybe called Interactive Technology or something similar.

THere’s a great utility for arts/design & graphics knowledge in College level CompSci courses. Don’t sell yourself short.

BTW: graphics Design is on lists of “worst majors” year after year after year. Not only is the pay, hours, job security and growth potential awful, the work conditions in general are soul sucking.
