ECs 1-10

I'm just a junior, but I'd like to see if I'm heading in the right direction.

1) Robotics Club (10-12) - (qualified for the VEX world championships, potentially VP next year).
2) Model United Nations (11-12) - (been to 3 conferences so far, will attend all 5 next year. I have won awards in advanced comittees at two of these conferences).
3) Football Announcer (11-12) - (only 1 game junior year, but going to do all of the games next year)
4) Investment Club (11-12)
5) Sports Analysis Club (11-12) - (founding member)
6) Philosophy Club (11-12) -
7) SWAT (11-12) - (Technology group at my school, going to total about 50 community service hours from it over my two years)
8) Teen Court (11-12) - (going to get about 75 hours total from it when all is said and done)
9) Newspaper (11) - (only 1 article, the Rays Season Preview Article in the newspaper this year)

I know it looks bad having started everything Junior year, but the only things that were available options before that were MUN and Teen Court. I go to a pretty small school, so many of these clubs are new, but strangely successful. Something I didn't mention on here was that I might join the Broadcast club next year (again, something new that came about a few months ago), and I might get one of my works published (I write poetry and some prose) either in the school literary magazine (which I might join as an editor of) or at a more credible source such as a literary magazine.

I'm scared that the lack of leadership experience might be evident as well, although I am involved in the community. I'm not sure if its the weakest area of my app., but I am worried about it.

I also forgot to mention I took an art history course overseas in the summer before junior year, 27 days in Florence, Italy.

Your ECs look padded to me.

thanks I guess....

I do Robotics after school (3:30 - 5:30 after school Mondays and Thursdays)

MUN doesn't have regular meetings, but 4 competitions yearly (we might have 5 next year)

The football games are all at 7 after school either on Thursday or Friday

Investment Club meets Tuesdays during our lunch period, but we participate in a quarterly stock market simulation out of the meeting itself

Sports Analysis meets Thursdays during lunch

Philosophy Club meets Fridays during lunch primarily (sometimes after school)

I do SWAT during 1/2 of my study hall periods

Teen Court is after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (I usually only go Tuesdays) from 5:00 - 7:30

and the Newspaper article I just wrote on my own time.

I really don't think its unmanageabe or unbelievable. Its not like I have to deal with NHS or anything (yes, I'm bitter for not getting in =p).

If by padded you meant that I'm taking random ECs for the hell of it. I'm taking all the technology courses available at my school, so it shouldn't be unrealistic that I'm doing SWAT. I want to go into law (and need community service hours) so Teen Court isn't ridiculous. I'm a philosophy buff and am taking two different elective philosophy courses next year. My technology background includes two robotics classes so robotics is big to me. I've won awards for MUN and I might do International Relations as a minor so its not like I just show up to get it on my resume. I'm also a sports buff and a decent orator so the announcing and the sports analysis club aren't that wierd. I also want to be a published writer, and I love sports (especially the Rays, hell, look at my name), so writing an article isn't that farfetched, is it? Broadcast (if I do it) ties into learning more about announcing (which is something I'd like to do later in life, but realize my better chances in other fields).

If you can connect your ECs together to emphasize on your goal(s), then I think it'll work out.

ugh, I don't mean to rant, but its that kind of mindset that irks me about this entire process. God forbid I do things in high school that I genuinely enjoy, that would be ridiculous, it must all be directed towards a future I am unsure of. Not a personal attack on you by any means, but I guess the question that is generated is do you feel that a wide range of ECs like this (that admittedly don't have much connection) is going to hurt me? If so thats kind of ridiculous IMHO (obviously not too well versed on the whole process)

Of course not TampaRaysKid. I think you should have a healthy balance of things you genuinely enjoy doing and others that "expose" you to things that you could possibly want to do as a career. I just saw that you had so many different clubs that made it look like you were just padding your resume. I'm sure that's how colleges do the application process by quickly going through. I'm certain that colleges are looking for things that sets the applicant apart from others.
