I do cancer (with an emphasis on molecular biology) research at a local university, and have collaborated on a publication (of which I am a co-author). This is completely outside the scope of my high school education. Does it count as an EC?

YES! Put it in the activities section. However, some people also fill it into the “Awards and Achievements.” It shouldn’t matter where you put it but do elaborate on specifically what you do. Consider attatching the published research paper and sending it to a college or at least an abstract. It will be sent to the appropriate science department and read and evaluated. Word will go back to admission officers about the quality of the research

Thanks for the input! I was just worried it would be far too academic to be included in the EC section…

^^

if you’ve spent time out of school working on it, then it is an extracurricular activity.
