EC's and Sports at Prep Schools.

What schools are known for a certain club or sport? Is Andover known for their debate team? Is St. Paul's famous for crew? etc.

Over many years, Blair has had the #1 wrestling team in the country. Boys basketball is also very strong with 3 graduates in the NBA.

About Blair and wrestling: VERY many years. It was that way when I was in HS. Some of their wrestlers won many of their matches by forfeit, they were so good that other coaches preferred to have their wrestlers lose by forfeit instead of trying to go in and at least try to avoid being pinned (which affects the team score) in order to have their wrestlers be able to compete another day. He was legendary across the state, owing to both his improbably name and gawdy record. In the late 1970s there was one wrestler in the heavyweight class...though now I'm not sure if he wrestled for Blair...whose name was Vinny Minni -- with an average pin time of under 45 seconds. In football, most parents drove to the game with Blair because of their PGs -- as many parents didn't want to wait for the team bus to leave before driving to get medical attention for their child. When we played Blair at home we had a second ambulance on call. Yeah, those were the days....

According to my son, Blair's PG wrestlers (and maybe some hs wrestlers?) only play colleges because the high schools don't want to play them. The head wrestling coach also coaches for the Olympics. If you are a wrestler, it's the place to be! For those you you who are not wrestlers or even strong athletes, Blair still has much to offer.

Mercersburg has an amazing swimming program, which over the years have produced 23 Olympians, winning 3 gold medals (two by Melvin Stewart '88) and numerous other silver and bronze medals. For the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, one Mercersburg swimmer who now attends the University of Connecticut swam for Lebanon.

Mercersburg baseball is also very strong, and has won the MAPL championship many times.

"When we played Blair at home we had a second ambulance on call."

haha you better have an ambulance on call when i come over to your house to play.

NMH-probably the best basketball boarding school. ranked #11 in nation last year I think
South Kent-also really good at basketball
Hotchkiss-really good debating program
Andover-also really good debating program currently
Exeter-good water polo
Loomis-#1 lacrosse in New England
Avon/Salisbury/Taft-best at hockey traditionally
Salisbury-I think currently #1 in new england for football

That's all I can think of at the moment

What about Choate?

Drama program, no? (for Choate)

hotchkiss has one of the best debate teams...... we have 3 debaters heading to World's which is the absolute maximum debaters that a school can send...

we also hosted that competition last year which will be held in south africa this year

As for Canadian Preps......

St. Andrews -
- Rapidly improving debate team, two students there representing Canada at the Internationals in South Africa (like what bearcats said) as well as the coach will be from St. Andrews too (my former english teacher)
- Great arts program (we have had many world class bagpipers who graduated from our school) yes, they have a pipes and drums programs, one of the best in Canada. Also, 5 of the modern Group of Seven graduated from there.
- Great hockey and squash program (varsity hockey is ranked #1 in Toronto)

UCC
- Pretty good sports teams overall, one of the few schools that offer crew
- I heard they had a good debate program as well
- They have the oldest/most famous school yearbooks (started since 1857)
- The World Affairs Conference - similar to Model UN, oldest student run conference
- Pretty sweet drama program

St. Michaels College School
- AMAZING sports programs (successful in almost every sport), many NHL stars today went there

All of these are boy schools btw, the rest im not too sure about

How's SPS for debating?

Tops. Very hard to make the team so start getting experience now at summer debate camps, etc. My brother will be your competition (we hope) and he's getting good!

This one time, at summer debate camp...

D'Yer Maker: I wrestled against Blair Academy four years in a row in the 1970s,during the Mark Lieberman era(the U.S. Olympian). I think we won 2 or 3 of those matches. Also wrestled at prep nationals at Lehigh University. Blair denies it, but they recruit the top wrestlers nationally. The coach did not make the team ; the team makes the coach. Actually it is probably a reciprocal relationship. Point is that do not go to Blair to become a great wrestler if you are not already well on your way.

Jonathon: Debate at St. Paul's School is open to anyone wishing to do the work. SPS uses two alternating debate coaches, one male and one female. Debate requires a lot of hard work and mental dexterity. Two of the top debate colleges are the Univ. of Alabama and Northwestern University. Probably need a national ranking in high school to get any interest from either university. At SPS you may be novice or advanced. Just determines your level of competition similiar to varsity and junior varsity. Typically you debate with a partner against another two person team. Loomis Chafee has one or two debaters who went to internationals in South Africa.

St. Paul's School had the best crew team in the world two years ago as they were the first American team to win the (blank)Helmsley? Regatta in England. The first boat members were heavily recruited by several Ivies like Harvard and Penn.

Burb Parent: Public schools cannot compete against PGs by law. It,therefore,is not uncommen for preps with PGs to compete against JV college teams. Never saw any wrestler forfeit to a Blair wrestler-Not even to Mark Lieberman.

The quintessential prep school sport: Lacrosse.

Boarding Schools in final 2006 national high school lacrosse rankings:

10> Lawrenceville

16> Loomis Chaffee

24> Salisbury

25> Deerfield

58> Avon Old Farms

71> Middlesex

118> Choate

179> Exeter

249> Hotchkiss

293> Andover

281> Taft

290> Hill

's are from laxpower.com and are out of 2,489 ranked teams in the country.

For a top lacrosse player NE WEST I is the place to be: Salisbury beat Loomis and Avon beat them both last year. Incredible talent and depth in the league especially at the top 5-6 teams, Salisbury, Deerfield, Loomis, Taft, Hotchkiss and Avon Old Farms. Of course, the PG's are a big factor but there's just a lot of athleticism in general. All of the league schools send a lot of kids to very good schools in Div I and Div III.

IMHO, L'Ville was a little over-rated last year as they play a pretty weak schedule - lots of NJ public schools.
