Does the whole "well-rounded" thing apply anymore?

My ECs include:
Mock trial
Physics Olympics
Science Olympiad
Science Club
Building with Books (not literally, we raise money to build schools in third-world countries)

You can probably tell that I am pretty science-oriented. Is it bad to concentrate on one area? I've also heard that colleges are swaying towards the kids with distinct interests versus the "do everything" kids... is this true?

your best bet is to be focused in my opinion. Be well rounded to the extent you can be with respect to strong grades, scores, essays, recs, in addition to ECs but i think at least in my case it was very beneficialy to be focused on my interests. even if you dont have ONE thing you LOVE, focus on a few but not a million

btw, i think yours are good provided you back it up with the other stuff, maybe get involved in science in other ways too if you can...ie research, competitions etc

I do participate in a lot of competitions with science. For research, is there any way I can get involved with that? I have heard of people working with professors and scientists at universities and companies, but how exactly do I do that?

Find a topic you found interesting in one of your science classes...then research it on google. Write a proposal and email it to science/tech companies in your area. If they are excited about your research and they have availabe resource, you might be in luck. Or you can do it the easy way and work with your science teacher on it. Amazing things can be achieved without the technology of companies/institutes.

ooo, that's a great idea. thanks!
