hi im a sophomore and a penn hopeful. i was wondering what ECs i should do to get into penn. havent taken the SATs yet or anything and grades r pretty good, but im worried about not doing enuf extra curriculars.

Sports: (what i should have by end of high school)

winter track- 1 year freshman, 3 years varsity
spring track- 1 year freshman, 3 years varsity

clubs: future physcians of america, politics club, newspaper, VP freshman year only, math league + science league (havent won any awards or anything), model UN.

1 research experience, looking for more this year

community service: 300+ hrs volunteering in a hospital-- working toward congressional award.

ideas:
~piano: used to play up until last year- dropped it cuz running and school made me too busy
~EMT: one of my friends does this and i wanna but i think i might b too busy to do this.
~thinking about starting a club?? maybe…

im concerned that there is nothing special i have done to put on my app. any ideas? i appreciate the help.

There is no set of ECs that will get you into Penn. You do what you like to do. National awards never hurt though but follow your passions

On that note, your ECs seem average-good for a Penn applicant. Just make sure to stick to what you like, that way you never go wrong.

Your EC's are fine; just continue to follow your interests. However, it's important you develop leadership positions in the clubs that you're currently a member of. Just showing up to meetings doesn't mean anything; active and meaningful involvement in them makes all the difference.

what is a "research experience"? And how do I approach trying to be a part of one?

i did mine thru the school and as a part of a program hosted by a local college.

another thing to consider: being an indian male, should i be doing more extra things since there is more competition for me.

thanks

the more, the greater your passion for all, the better

Don't EVER take up ECs just for your college app. It's simply not worth it.

Take up underwater basket-weaving. Trust me, if you make the varsity team, they will be drooling over you. My older sister's boyfriend's cousin did that and was not only accepted but got a scholarship for his talents at the varsity and national levels. Penn wanted him so bad that they just ignored the whole not giving athletic scholarships in order to get him to attend the school. All colleges long to have an underwater basking weaving champ of their own, I highly recommend that route. Forget running, start weaving.
