<p>I would say it depends where you want to go to school. At the most competitive schools, most of the people applying will have great numbers, so things like essays and and ECs will be pretty important.</p>
<p>Stereotypically at least, public universities care a lot about great grades, rank, sats, etc. and slightly less about ECs and the like. However private universities usually make a big deal about well roundedness of the student body and take a more holistic approach. And if your applying to upper level/most competitive schools, both are pretty much necessary.</p>
