ok guys so here is my problem ! my dad makes around 180k a year but he doesnt wanna pay for my college education.. he said that if he was able to build himself from nothing then i should be able to do even better.. now i have three jobs i work at a gas station.. i work at my dads office and private math tutoring. that doesnt leave a lot of time for EC's now i wanna know how bad will this look ? or maybe if i wrote that in my essay would they understand ?

That’s why the UC application has a whole section dedicated to extra-curricular activities and work experience. They take that stuff into consideration.

so work and EC count the same right ? and i am a math major… so there arnt that many ECs for my major would that be considered too ?

you’re fine with your ECs. instead, you should stress about your grades

That is an impressive work load you have. Redo is correct; for CC transfers, GPA and major prep are the two most important factors. EC’s typically will only help at UCLA/UCB, and for scholarships after you have gained admission.

Work is better. Plus it builds up your resume. Just keep up your grades. You should be fine.

actually i am aiming on UCLA/UCB and my gpa might end up around 3.75~ would that be good enough ?

Depends on your major.

^OP already said he was a math major. and hmmm maybe go do the statfinder thing

Oops my bad, missed it.

as a warning, it sucks being a math major (at least at ucla) if you’re worried about money. my roommate is applied math and missed 3 major classes at registration bc they were filled up by his scheduled registration time. now he is taking a couple random classes to stay full time, hoping he can get them next quarter. bc math courses are contingent upon each other, this will set him back at least one quarter. and at $3900/quarter+living+food…

Not to discount the work at a gas station, but why is that one of your three jobs if your dad makes that kind of salary?

well like i have said he doesnt wanna support me… basically the only thing he is giving me is my room and food… clothes is on me, books is on me, transportation is on me, everything is on me… i cant even go out because all i am doing it work and study and sleep ! i work around 27hours a week and i am a full time student… and i have no car so i spend A LOT OF TIME ON THE ROAD… i was thinking about writing about this in my personal statement… and as for mkcman i gonna try to get as many scholarships as i can and student loans… but my only concern is that my GPA might drop to around 3.75 and i wanna know if i got good chances to go to UCLA and UCB and i wanna also add on that that i came to the US 3 years ago not speaking a word and then my dad lay that thing on me out of nowhere… so if anyone could give me an estimate if i got a chance to go to UCLA,UCB that would be great…
