I joined a few of my extracurriculars in winter/spring of my sophomore year. The activities are ones that either have fall/spring sessions or are just full year. As a junior and a senior I plan to participate for the full year. How do I indicate that I participated for that initial half year?

I wouldn't really worry about it and would just count the half year at all, but I didn't really have many extracurriculars freshman/most of sophomore year and don't want it to look like I joined everything junior year. So how would I go about indicating this on the common app?

I think you could just mark it as the whole year. For example, I tutor on occasion, and when I do have a client it’s 1 hour every week, but I don’t have a client for every week of the entire school year. But instead of averaging out the hours so it would end up be like .35 hrs/week or something random because of the weeks I didn’t have anyone, he said just to say 1 hr/wk. So it doesn’t have to be exact, I guess? You could mention it in the “additional info” box if you wanted to, though. =)
