Hi, I'm currently filling out the common application right now. On the EC section, there are 7 slots. I have six of the filled out with solid activities that I love. However, I can think of nothing significant for the last slot. I'm in NHS, but in my school, NHS does nothing; it is just a membership thing with some community service every now and then. Also I do not feel the same way for NHS as I do for my other activities. Should I mention it, or any other activity for that matter, just for the sake of filling everything up, or would that actually end up hurting my cause? I'm applying to top to slightly-below-the-top schools, if that means anything here (Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, UChicago, for example).

the adcoms can't really tell whether you're passionate about it or not. You should put it down anyway in the 7th slot, because it is kind-of a given anyway. Having it 7th means 7th in importance. However, it really depends on how many hours you have been involved in it. If it was something like 10 hours/year, don't bother. if you've spend 20 or more hours on NHS a year, it is somewhat worth it to just list it.
