Would it be better to cram every detail about extracurriculars onto the Common App, or to have only the most basic information on there (positions, hours, years, and one or two awards) and to elaborate upon them on a brag sheet?

I would go with something in between.

You do not have the space to cram every detail about your EC’s onto the common app, nor do you want to. The adcoms do not have time to read 5 sentences about each EC. That said, you also don’t want the most basic of information on there either. Try to do something like this:

Key Club - Treasurer (11th-12th); Member (10th-12th)
3 Hours / Week ; 36 Weeks / Year
Handled finances; Collected membership dues; Managed bank account.

Something to that effect works best.

Oh yeah - an additional resume is not needed. I believe it is a little presumptuous for a 17 year old to put together a resume when the college has deemed the 10 spaces for EC’s to be good enough. It’s like you’re saying that you have a better way of doing it than the colleges do.
