EC's

So, I'm a junior right now, and plan to start my application process for colleges in the summer. When looking at my EC's I have 3 main ones... Football (freshmen year only) Technical Theatre (sophomore year only) and Band (Junior and senior year) and then I'm in Math UIL and I'm joining NHS, Mu Alpha theta and hopefully science NHS. However the first two I only did for one year, but excelled in both.. I just realized that I didn't really like them until I tried them and put forth my full effort.

Will colleges understand that or will It look like I just quit them?

And also, when stating my EC's, will I be able to explain that I learned how to read music and play in the marching band in only one month of band camp? Or will I have to explain that in my essays? Or is that just not impressive at all? (I also made drumline with no prior drumming experience and less than a year of practice, with the best drumline in our school district/city... kind of =P) Thanks in advance!

bumpity bump bump!

The vast vast majority of colleges don’t evaluate ECs whatsoever. Those that do, use them slightly to differentiate among 1000s of acadmically super qualified applicants. What sorts of schools are you targeting?

It’s perfectly fine to try something out and then decide it’s not ‘you.’ That’s what high school (and college) is for. You’ve obviously found something you care about - music- and are committed to it. You are clearly contributing to your school/community and are not a hermit. Beyond that, most schools will not care. Only the most selective schools are looking for more than that.

@T26E4 I’m mainly targeting top schools. More specifically MIT…
