EC's

What ECs are yo taking??? I have very few, but am interested in a lot of different topics so I wanted to see what you guys are doing. Also, I want to start a club next year, but don't know entirely on what so I would appriciate if someone could help. Thanks :D.

Debate, soccer, mocktrial, skillsUSA, cheerleading, IMPACT, and NHS next year. Starting a club sounds cool, what are you interested in?

What is IMPACT and skillsUSA? Just curious.

IMPACT is a program in my community where high school students go to elementary and middle schools to teach the kids about making good choices and stuff like that. SkillsUSA is actually a pretty big program nationwide, I am suprised that almost nobody on this site has heard of it. Anyway, it is a program where students can compete in a ton of different competitions; everything from welding and carpentry to nail care and CPR. We just had our state competition this weekend, and I won second in community service and customer service and third in prepared speech. :)

o wow. That sounds cool! I'm really interested into a community service, environmental saving, and things like that. I really want to do something to make a difference! I like the IMPACT thing. That sounds really good. Especially because we are ranked #7 in the nation for schools and we don't have any type of program like that here. thanks! Anyone else?

You could start a volunteer club, maybe something like key club! If you are into the enviormental things, maybe you and a group of friends could volunteer to clean up a park on a regular basis (be delicate when asking the park supervisor about this though, you don't want to offend him/her and make them think that you think the park is dirty!) I don't know if you are in a similar situation, but my school has all of the blue tubs that say recycle on them, and everyone is careful to only put paper the tubs, but the school doesn't even recycle (what liars!!). Maybe if your school is the same way, you could volunteer to make sure that the contents of those tubs actually get recycled.

I'm actually in a club called planet earth, but we hvnt done anything and it's kind of making me mad!! So I think your idea is great!! We have a key club and really wanted to join, but it was at the same time as mu alpha theta and mu alpha theta is an honor society so I chose that over key club :(.

My main ECs are
1) Math club: Just about the awesomest club ever. Didn't use to be so awesome, back when we had about five regularly participating members.
2) Olympiad Team: started this club to prepare for the AMCs and other olympiads. It was really fun, but none of the freshmen or sophomores actually qualified for AIME (which was sad, because they were mostly the people who came to meetings).
3) Physics Club: My friend started this club to help people with physics, it was a bit fun initially but then nobody started coming to meetings except my group of friends, so it became a bit pointless. I don't think we have meetings anymore...
4) Biological Research Club: First club I started, it was a journalism-type club where we basically wrote a newspaper to tell people what was going on in the world of biological research. Originally I thought it was kinda cool, but then nobody started coming to the meetings except my group of friends, and I realized it was a crappy idea. (Of course, it didn't help that I had no leadership experience.) By the way, we need a president for next year if you're interested, there definitely won't be any electoral competition ;)

So basically, here are some words of advice about starting clubs:
(1) Pick your club wisely
(2) Be very organized
(3) Actually stay interested in the club
(4) It helps if you have some sort of outside event or fundraiser or whatnot to motivate the meetings. Like the AMCs :D
(5) If you don't have a lot of activities planned out in the beginning, people start to lose interest and stop coming to meetings pretty fast. So make sure you not only actually are very organized, but you also seem very organized.
(6) Don't elect officers the first year, it makes the club a lot more disorganized. Stick with your hired goons.
(7) Pick a sponsor who might actually care (like the math club sponsor)

I agree that math club=amazing along with the sponser!! lol. If your serious about the biological researhc club I would be honored to take it off your hands!!! It sounds really cool and informal! I think we could do a lot with it!
