ECs

Hi everyone!

I have a slight problem concerning my ECs. I am an American living in Germany and go to a German public school. Our school is part of a German network called "Schule ohne Rassismus - Schule mit Courage" (translation: school without racism - school with courage). I am in the group of students that organizes lots of projects through this network for the whole school. there are really tons of projects that we organize, we have what we call "anti-racism-training" for the fifth grades (my school goes from 5th to 13th grade) where we talk to them about prejudices and racism and why it isn't a good thing, a group of disabled people comes and tells the children in 6th grade about their lives and how it is to cope with a disability, we organize a concert every year etc.

should I list all this as one EC "Schule ohne Rassismus", or should I list each of the projects on it's own? because it seems that everyone has about 20 ECs, while I just have like 3. but the one EC consists of so many projects that i probably spend as much time on the one as those with 20 projects do altogether.

buuuuuummp

When it comes to ECs what matters is the quality and depth of the ECs and not the quantity. I doubt that the applicants who list “20+” ECs are all that common, and that the ECs for those who do list 20+ get more than a glance.

So the short answer/advice is list the overall program as the EC. That said, what is unclear to me is your specific role and personal contribution in the program. That’s what really matters. You say you’re part of a group, but does that mean that each of you all do your own small part? If so, that’s not so compelling. I would expect that in a group there are leaders and doers. Are you one of them? If so then stress what you achieved in that role. Two or three examples are enough, and if they are major, it’s hard to expect more.

I would personally list it as one, noting the hours and weeks you spend on it. I would then elaborate on the “Additional Information” section listing the specifics. Don’t worry about having only 3 EC’s. It’s quality not quantity. The only thing that really matters, imo, is your passion for each and your time spent doing them.

jshain is correct. You undermine yourself by listing lots of individual projects and activities. By presenting them together, as one activity, they demonstrate a deep commitment to a program with a particular mission. And while leadership matters, so does creativity, empathy, courage, and a host of other important characteristics that you could highlight.
