ECU admission

Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me an opinion on my chances of getting into ECU with my stats

GPA 2.6 (I screwed up my first 2 years)
SAT: 1370
ACT:21
Taken 4 Honors classes since junior year
Im in the upper 60% of my class

Appreciate your thoughts....My pirate port said an admissions decision has been made but doesnt tell me result, and said I would know by mail...is this standard for either admission or rejection?

Hello
I am currently on ECU’s Waiting List
Here are my Stats

Intended Major- Criminal Justice

GPA Weighted 3.35
GPA Unweighted 3.21
SAT 1380

I have taken 5 honors classes
I’m in the upper 30% of my class

Dinara, have you received your letter yet? My DD received the same message on her Pirate Port Account but has not yet received the letter. I think that is a standard message but not sure. Her stats were much like yours in that she slipped her Jr year in HS and her GPA is 2.3 and her SAT in 1580 (1000 Math & Reading Only), she did not take ACT. I did talk to the Admissions Office about a week before she submitted her app and they told me then that there were only about 1000-1500 slots left open and that the current “admissions standard”, meaning the average of the current students they were actually accepting had a 3.1 GPA and at least a SAT of 950 on Math and Reading Only, as they do not look at the Writing portion of SAT.

Good Luck to you!

My S is an ECU jr. His stats were similiar to yours when he applied 3 years ago.
His SAT was 1440 (960 m+v), gpa a little over 3.0, class rank barely in the top 33%.
He took eleven honors classes, two AP’s and two dual enrollment classes at the Comm. College. He also failed one sem. of spanish :frowning: and had eight C’s on his transcript.
He worked a year 'round part-time job from tenth grade until graduation and was a four year football player. He applied very early in his senior year and was accepted in Nov.
He loves ECU. Good Luck to all of you and GO PIRATES…yes, I went to ECU too.

Good luck to everyione waiting. Niece has very similar stats to all above and ECU was her first choice. Was told she was DENIED at Christmas and that there was no deferral system. As the vigilant aunt who has been down this road twice, I looked at Common Dataset and wrote and called admissions on my own to find out what their situation is. The Associate Dean told me their Common Data Set numbers were misleading-that their acceptances were in a much higher range-which other data does not support. niece was finally told she was being deffered until March, and that her GPA 2.8 (weighted) would have to improve.

The Provost of the UNC system has actually been involved in this. I know ECU kids love their school, but their admissions policies and staff need to get their act together. Niece already accepted at WCU and UNC-G- both of whom have higher selectivity ratings. The entire situation is unbelievable-she will end up at different school and EC will have lost a student that would have made a contribution to the university.

Georgiatwins, sorry to hear that about your niece. You didn’t mention if she is in state or out? Also what were her EC’s and SAT scores and did she provide any Letters of Recommendation? ECU has extended their App deadline and that tells me that they did because they still have openings. I know for a fact that the first week in March they still had 1000-1500 open Freshman spots. As to getting in, the Admissions Office told me that as I said above the “real” current needed scores based on the apps they were receiving and admitting were 3.1 GPA Unweighted (they do NOT consider Weighted GPA at all) and at least a 950 SAT on Math and Reading only. Again they do not consider the Writing portion. Doesn’t look good for anyone under those stats.

However as to WCU and UNC-G they do not have higher admission standards, they are in fact lower than ECU and are 2 of the easiest schools in the UNC Ssytem to get into. matter of fact if you have a pulse and can fog a mirror you can get into Western Carolina.

^ I have to agree with bigseegar. S was also accepted to WCU and asked to consider the Honors program there. I guess because his h.s. gpa was over 3.0. We were pretty surprised that someone with a low SAT score and an F on his transcript would get mail regarding the honors college.

I do believe that being male is an advantage at the schools that are heavily female.
The region of NC you’re from matters too since public universities want a balanced class with all areas of NC represented. A female with a borderline application who is from the NC mountains will have a lot better shot than the female with borderline app. fr. the Raleigh area because ECU gets hundreds of apps from Raleigh area females but likely far fewer apps. from females in the NC mountains.

Thanks for everyone’s input. Niece’s GPA unweighed is 2.8, SAT CR+M= 1020. The fact that someone told a parent of the large number of available openings is amazing…the ADCOM i spoke with told me they had a HUGE applicant pool which was making decisions tougher. Niece has strong EC’s- involved in local feed the hungry, musical theatre, accomplished equestrian ( would be bringing 2 horses to ride with their team). Also officer in 4H, etc. She is from a public high school in Forsyth county-what is amazing to me is that a friend of hers with lower GPA and slightly lower SAT was accepted at Thanksgiving. My info. about admissions ratings comes from the Princeton’s Review selectivity rating. Having gone to Wake for post-grad myself, I would tend to agree with prior post’s assessment. Even if she is admitted now, I think she will end up at UNC-G, which saddens me because I think of it as a commuter school. If 'EC changes their mind at lets her in off the waitlist, I would be thrilled for her to go. Good luck to all here.

Thanks and good luck to everyone! Im still on the Waiting List I called the ECU Admissions Office yesterday they said that they would start making final decisions March 31st!

DD received her letter today, she did not get in. She is of course heartbroken and I feel as if I have failed her as a parent. In talking with the ADCOm they are ONLY looking at GPA, Class rank and SAT (M&CR only). EC’s are not coming into play at all. He said less than a 3.2 GPA you didn’t have much of a shot at getting in this year as he claimed the App Pool had an average of that and thus they were now being very selective.

Sorry to hear that bigseegar. It’s heartbreaking to see them so sad but it’s not your fault. Don’t beat yourself up. Does your DD have other acceptances?

I think ECU is trying to increase it’s admissions standards. I also don’t think it’s wise to say one school is better than another. My son had a teacher he really respected make a joke about ECU to his class which really upset me as an ECU graduate. My son is deciding on schools and didn’t even apply to ECU. Part of the reason he didn’t apply was to be different than his old man, but I’m sure comments like that of his teacher do influence kids like him. It might be wise for some of the borderline kids to go the community college route and then transfer.

It felt great to be admitted, but I won’t be attending; ECU doesn’t have my program.

Admitted
SAT: 2120–Not submitted
ACT: 31 Superscored
GPA: 4.2 W, 3.2 UW
Rank: 10/50
Instate
Legacy (Dad & Brother)

Yeah =/ The Collegeboard site for ECU says "Freshman admission decisions based on a formula that weighs class rank, high school GPA (unweighted), and standardized test scores. "

This year, a kid from my school was so excited about getting into ECU and, when he told one of his teachers, the teacher made a humorous and well-intended, but inappropriate joke. The other teachers, many of whom attended ECU, are still repudiating that teacher.

I do have to say, ECU has not been the most fortunate with names. A joke I’ve heard several times is “EZU.” As an archival intern last summer, I learned that, back when ECU was ECTC (East Carolina Teachers College), detractors pronounced it “Easy Teasy.”

ECU is better than UNC-Greenville.

Spoken like a true Pirate Sandford Dad…arrgghh.
When S2 began applying, he heard some derogatory talk about ECU and Western.
He has not visited either at that point. After he was accepted we went to G’vlle and did the official tour. S2 loved it. From then on, he paid no attention to anyone’s remarks. Now a junior, he’s a Pirate for Life.

A neighbor whose S was accepted to ECU the same year as S2 and who knew S2 was going to ECU said to me “I wouldn’t want my S to go to such a party sch”. His S went to UNC-W.

I checked my Pirate Port today and it said " Thank you for applying to ECU. Your application has been reviewed and a decision has been made by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. A letter will be sent via U.S. Postal Service.

Transcript due upon Graduation

I can’t wait to get my letter! I hope I got accepted. GO PIRATES

“Transcript due upon graduation” sounds pretty encouraging footballplayer61.
I hope it’s good news for you.

I called the Undergraduates Admissions Office today
I GOT ACCEPTED

I will be getting the acceptance letter in the mail later this week!

Big Congrats to you FP61. My ECU S was a four year starting DE in h.s. He loves Pirate Football season and is also a CJ major. Welcome to the Pirate Nation where Purple Reigns.

Thanks PackMom! I am a 2 year Varsity DT I can’t wait to go to a Pirate Football Game! My Next step is to get Financial Aid in order. If I get enough financial aid I will be attending ECU in the fall. I can’t wait to be a student at one of the best colleges in NC and be a part of the ECU pirate experience!
