ECU or UNCW

I have been accepted to both schools and considering both of them. Would love to hear some feedback of which school is better. (campus, education, environment, ect.)

Have you visited both? What do you plan to study? They are both eastern NC so some similarities in general. Most people like the town of Wilmington over Greenville, but Greenville is all about the university, which has some perks. ECU is bigger, in population and acreage, and has a bigger University feeling, UNCW has a much cozier feeling.

@eaglesfan1998

what do you want to study?

@LBad96 seems to be the go-guy around here for info about UNCW, maybe he can chime in.

i’m not a student so I can’t give feedback from that perspective. ECU is a nice campus of about 500 acres in the heart of Greenville, a small city of about 90,000. i walk there pretty often and it always strikes me as a pleasant campus with a positive, energetic vibe. lots of local kids stay here for college. we also get lots from New Jersey. the weather is good here too. i think any student would enjoy the campus and environment here.

academically i would suppose they are similar. if you pay attention to the USNews rankings, ECU comes in at #194 National Universities, and #111 Public Universities. similar to, i guess West Virginia University or thereabouts. ECU has a medical school and i know a few local students who are going here for pre-med. my next-door-neighbors on either side sent their kids here. one passed up NC State because he liked ECU’s campus so much better. for what it’s worth, i know of three local students who started at UNCW, and the next year they came back here. possibly more for personal reasons than anything specifically about UNCW.

football is a pretty big deal here, and they have a good baseball team. both ECU and UNCW are part of the larger UNC system. i believe you will get a solid education and a great college experience at either school. i know ECU students love being part of Pirate Nation.

Thanks for the responses. I am looking to major in business. I have toured both schools both are really beautiful. I dislike the party reputation of ecu. I heard there isn’t anything to do on the weekends except party? UNCW I have heard has a lot more activities on weekends and it has a better academic reputation? Thoughts?

UNCW is far better than ECU overall, we have the edge in academics, Wilmington is a lot nicer than Greenville (one of my good friends is from there), our campus is nicer, etc. ECU is good if A) you want to be a nurse, doctor, dentist, or engineer and/or B) you want to go to football games. If you’re studying anything else, particularly business or biology or film or computer science, UNCW is the obvious choice.

Oh, and you’re choosing between two rival schools. While we don’t have a ton of school spirit in the way of sports, the sense of community here is nothing short of world-class. This university is a FAMILY. Choose the teal side; the real side.

PS: might be a little biased because someone I really didn’t like in high school goes there lol. But I think I’m right for the most part.

EDIT: fellow business major here. ECU’s business program isn’t superb by any means, and they’re much more known for partying than the strength of their business school. If you dislike the party rep of ECU and want a well-respected business school, then we are the obvious choice. Don’t blow it lol

I have heard that the reputation of ECU takes away from obtaining a degree from there? Does anyone think that?

@eaglesfan1998 yes. We laugh at ECU and make jokes about them all the time here. It’s good fun tbh. Obviously they have some decent programs but they’re generally a very mediocre school.

Well, ECU has always had a party rep, but so did UNCW and App in my day. I think the party reputation is more from the students at other schools (^see above). I work in finance in NC and I can tell you that people look at how you did at any school, not just where you went. There are some school here in NC and VA that we make us roll our eyes when resumes come in, but ECU and UNCW are not on that list.

If you are into rankings, on various sites, ECU’s business school ranks slightly better than UNCW, while both are “unranked” for business by sites like US News.

@ITBgirl what are your sources for ECU’s business school being ranked higher?? Assuming you’re talking about undergrad, I’d like to challenge the legitimacy of those sources.

^respectfully so, of course.

Don’t get your feathers ruffled @LBad96 , I just made some quick google searches, I do believe the sites were ranking the graduate programs at the two schools

@ITBgirl okay fair enough. I assumed you were referring to undergrad lol.

@eaglesfan1998 what did you decide on?

@ITBgirl @LBad96 I decided on UNCW. Campus is amazing and has a much better reputation than ECU. Thanks for the help!

You made the right choice. CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME TO DUB NATION!!!

WINGS UP!!!
