@classof2018app Oh nice, I ended up calling today and they told me I was deferred as well. Kinda bummed that we have to wait another two months to find out, but life goes on.

Yeah I mean deferred is better than rejected :). My friend with triple legacy from Harvard(two parents and 1 sister currently attending) got deferred from Harvard :O. It could be a lot worse. We will definitely have a greater chance going into RD, and we don’t have to compete with the athletes anymore since the coaches tell them to do ED if they want to go to the college.

ha ha i got deferred too. deferral party up in here.

Did anyone receive a rejection letter? Did everyone get deferred?

lol lets create a fb group of deferrals… hahaha just kidding.

@classof2018app did they say all the people who were deferred have a high chance in the RD round? I am unsure of what I should do now, besides sending in the rest of my apps. AND I have to do well in finals because second quarter matters. this is so frustrating.

and @whoacollegeyeah isn’t it four months? we find out in april right?

@seniorhighschool The admissions officer might have sugar-coated it for me since I was over the phone (I haven’t even received my letter yet). I think it’s best for us to just focus on the rest of our apps and count Pomona as a regular decision college from here on out, even though we have a higher chance than someone else applying RD.

I was just shocked because my college counselor said that deferral rates are pretty low for all colleges, and I’ve heard from some source (I’ll look it up again) that Pomona deferral rates have been 5-7%. She wants me to prepare for the worst, but it’s hard to stop loving Pomona!

oh well I do too. I don’t know why they prolong our misery, but I have already counted Pomona off my list. I suggest you do that too in order to stop yourself from going mad

I think I’m getting there, but easier said than done! I wish us all the best of luck for RD notifications in late March! Come back to this forum and let us know of the decisions…

Essays (subject and responses): Common app essay was about my experience with vulnerability in music (I know, it sounds super cheesy just based on that, but my college counselor (a former U Penn admissions officer) said that it was the best essay he had read in 5 years, and it made him cry. I loved it.
Supplement was about my experience with volunteering, and what I learned from my students. I was also really happy about that one, and my counselor thought it was really good too.
Teacher Recs: Glowing, really. I had a really good relationship with the teachers who wrote them, and performed very well in their classes- plus, I thought they were very articulate.
Counselor Rec: I have no idea, but I love my counselor, and we have a good relationship.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I think that my biggest weakness was likely my GPA, which really wasn’t in the range of the people Pomona accepts. Honestly, I’ve considered what was wrong with my application a thousand times, and I really just wasn’t in their very top sector of applicants- and I think if you aren’t one of their highest-level applicants in terms of test scores and such (or a “hook”), it’s a little bit of a random draw.

@oboe: What is your SAT Subject Test scores?

@Manusia- I only sent ACT + writing, and never took subject tests (they weren’t required for any of my other schools). :)

@oboe: Did you get into any school?

great stats, oboe! that you didn’t get into pomona won’t make a dink of difference in your life. you’re going to do well, regardless. there’s absolutely nothing negative to take away from pomona’s decision. they just didn’t have enough seats for everyone as promising as you. continue to give it everything you have wherever you go, whatever you do.

Wow Oboe. You will go places, and I promise that. Looking at your stats, I’m wondering why Pomona didn’t accept you. It just shows how selective they were this year. I’m sure that you will go to a great college with those stats. Don’t get discouraged Btw, I don’t think that your GPA was a weakness, since your class rank is in top 10 percent for sure. I think that it is, as you said, somewhat of a random decision on Pomona. Looking at your stats, I can’t really pinpoint a single weakness really

@Manusia- I didn’t apply anywhere EA, but I’ve applied to all my RD schools now (so no responses yet)- fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone, that’s really nice . I mean, I know my GPA is in-range, but my thinking was that, because it (and my test scores), weren’t as high as a lot of their accepted applicants, that could have been something of a weakness for me. Just hoping to get into another school now, but I understand Pomona’s decision (and that it was a little bit luck-of-the-draw).
