Hi, I am considering applying ED 1 at NYU Stern school of business. My SAT score is 1500 (770 Math and 730 EBRW). My UW GPA is 3.71 and weighted GPA is 3.94. My transcript is: 9th Grade (2 B+, 1A-, 3A); 10th Grade (2B+, 3A-, 2A); 11th Grade (1B, 3A-, 3A). In math, I have always scored an A, and my coursework is rigorous. What are my chances of getting accepted?
Any insight and recent experience in terms of acceptable GPA and SAT scores for admission into Stern school, especially ED 1 would be greatly appreciated.
@EarlyDecision … I posted a reply to a similar post few weeks ago so I copy and paste below for my insight. In general, Stern admission is harder to get in than other NYU programs. My son told me most of his classmates are from either ED1 or ED2. He has a decent GPA and SAT scores and he got waitlisted from regular decision. So if Stern is your #1 pick go for ED.
My son just got into NYU stern (class of 2023). Just want to provide some insight. He applied Stern RD got rejected/waitlisted and later he got accepted from waitlist. My spouse is a NYU stern graduate so I assume legacy status did not help him for his RD application.
His high school stat: went to a top public HS in NYC, GPA unweighted around 94%, SAT 1570 (E770, M800), SAT2 - math2 800, physics 760, USH 740, he took 10 APs (6 thru junior yr all 5s, 4 in senior yr - 2 4s 2 5s).
He just finished his first week of NYU stern orientation. He told me during orientation the president says class of 2023 Stern admission rate was 7% (year b4 was 8%). Total Stern accepted 600, 50 in the BPE program. He is in the BPE program. Based on what he says most admitted students are from ED1 and ED2. Very few are from RD. So I assume Stern ED1 and ED2 chances are much much higher but make sure you are ok with the tuition.
Few tips on AP classes - He took AP Biology so he gets 8 credits from the elective. He took AP French so he gets waive the foreign language 4 credit. He took AP stat and he needs to take a NYU stat placement test to see if he can waive the fundamental Stat class 4 credit (just found out today he passed the placement test) and he only needs to take the regression stat class 2 credit. Unfortunately his AP Mico Econ and Macro Econ can not waive his NYU Econ classes. I believe Stern core classes can not be waived. So long story short. If you get accepted into Stern ED1/ED2 take a look at the Stern AP placement sheet and see which AP classes are most beneficial to you to take in May 2020. AP classes (score of 4 or 5) can save you big $.
I hope this message helps.
Good luck.
Thank you @bigdad930. Very helpful. Does your son know as to what his batchmates scores were who got in through ED 1? I am a student at a top private school in NJ, so I think that my GPA might get looked a little more favorably. My other option is to apply ED 1 at Emory, where I have better insight as to the admission requirements based on past acceptances from my school. I am interested in the field of data science/business. Stern school offers a concentration in data science. Also, the business school at Emory offers a dual degree where you can do business administration and MS in business analytics in 4.5 years. I have a high chance of getting accepted in Emory but am leaning towards Stern but also don’t want to waste my ED 1 option if my chances of getting into Stern are low.
@EarlyDecision … the only stern class mate score he knows is his friend from his same high school. He got accepted from RD (not ED1). His GPA is higher than my son (unweighted approx 95 to 96%) and his ACT, AP classes/scores, SAT subject test scores are about the same as my son. He is aiming for UPenn Wharton but he did not get in. Speaking of data science, my son just joined a Sports club features how to use computer or data science to extract NBA sports data to analyze. He likes sports so he is able to connect with classmates with same interest to data science. We went through the college application process last year so I know how stressful it is. Good luck.
