showing alot of interest

what are my chances?

great chance esp ED, emory loves 1st generationers and ppl who show interest

really 1st generation and interst matters that much?

Hold up...

A 3.6 GPA are your school is a B+ average? Wow, that is really interesting. At my school a B+ is a 3.33 and an A- is a 3.67...

a+ 4.6
a 4.4
a- 4.2
b+ 3.5
b 3.3
b- 3.1
.7 difference between a- and b+, its crazy

o wow. That is a huge difference from my school. There are no A+'s. A is a 4.0 and is the most you can get...

so what does everyone else think?

Grades may be a problem. Are you in top 10% of class? Emory is big on top 10 % ranking. SATs should be OK

Emory is prob a slight reach

school doesnt rank

My D was rejected ED1. She had a 3.78 junior yr. GPA at a very competitive prep school that dosent rank (a 3.84 after 1st trim. senior yr.) a 1330/2010 SAT, mostly all honors and AP classes, great EC's, Great recs, Showed a ton of interest (visited, DVD, went to 2 college fairs, emailed rep every 2-3 weeks, corresponded with admiss. office and music dept about ECs). Applied for Emory Scholars ( her guidance Counselor wanted her to). Everyone told her she had a good chance...

Seiclan,

Sounds like your daughter was a competitive candidate. I am sure that she will get accepted to a fine school.

In retrospect, do you think she should have applied for Emory Scholars? Contacted admissions so frequently?

Schools that don't rank often have groupings of students in certain GPA ranges. Although there is no rank official ranks, adcoms can determine where a student fits into their HS class academically. Regardless if a school ranks or not, Emory is quite interested in the caliber of student in the top 10% of their class. I have a friend who has a 98 average but is in the second grouping of students. 25 kids had abve 98, 60 were between 95 and 98, etc.... Based upon this info provided on the transcript and adcom can easily determine that he was roughly in the top 15%.

hopeful -

I don't believe that she could have or should have done anything differently. Yes, the Emory Scholars was a waste of her time given the stats of who gets it but we were told that it could only help the adcoms to see her commitment to the school (so she was honored to have been nominated to compete). She had a wonderful relationship with the local rep so no, she did not overdo the interest thing. I posted to this thread purely to show the OOP that college admissions is sometimes....random. Good students get in and good students get rejected. She had everything that some of the ED 1 admits had but (Emory and all) the colleges cannot accept everyone. She had hoped that her musical skills (and willingness to participate on the college level) would have been a tip in her favor but again, one never knows what is the "hook of the week". She will have many college choices and will be happy and successful whereever she attends because that is who she is.

You are correct. She sounds like an ideal student for Emory. Although Emory did not work out, she will thrive and succeed elsewhere. BTW, what other schools did she apply to?

She has applied to Boston U, U of Florida, U of Miami (dosen't want to go there after visiting campus), Florida State U (accepted with merit money), U. of Central Florida (accepted with merit money), and WUSTL (big reach)

Good group of schools. Did she consider Michigan?; deadline is next month.
WUSTL is a great school, having many similarities to Emory. Best of luck to you both!

I applied ED II to Emory with similar stats to your daughter and figure I have a 50/50 shot of getting in. I also have demonstrated strong interest. Who knows what awaits next month?

In addition, I applied to Tufts, Boston U, Vanderbilt, GWU & American.

She is debating if Boston is too cold for her South Florida blood. She didn't go for Michigan for that reason. Tufts did not have a business school. I forgot, she is applying to GWU also...she just has to send the common app. supplement (they have everything else already). I think if she had to decide today (which she doesn't) ...she would be between BU and UF.

BU is a bit cold and at times snowy. It takes some time to adjust to the weather. Good school; city is your campus. GWU appealed to me since it is smaller than the BU and is in a great location.

I am not sure if BU is for me. I would need to do some additional research and possibly visit in late February.
My sights are currently set on Emory and I expect to find out 1st week in February.

BTW, did Emory post the stats of last month's EDI applicants? Many schools already did but I did not see such info yet.

hmm so do you people think i shouldnt apply?

you have nothing to lose. If it is your top school, go for it.

ouch. and i thought it was a reasonable reach
