ED 1 To Vanderbilt with low GPA?

  • Hispanic
  • 1st generation to go to college (parents are divorced, foreign born & have no US education )
  • Male
  • US citizen & Florida resident
  • Really lower class (19.6k yearly income)

Major:

  • Undecided, maybe economics or statistics.

*3.58 HS UW GPA
*3.42 Official UW GPA Middle School-2.75/9th-3.43/10th-3.29 (With explanation b/c of health issues and economic issues)/11th-3.86/12th-3.86

  • 4.35 W GPA
  • 34 ACT 2270 SAT
  • School doesn’t do class rank or valedictorian. It’s #265 on US weekly so that’s kinda good i guess.
  • 14 APs : Human geo (4) World history (5) Music theory (4) psych (4) Stats (5) Spanish (5) US history (5), English language (5) taking cal AB, physics, lit, gov, macro, and environmental. Everything else honors except band/PE.
  • National AP scholar by junior year (Only about 3500 in the US)

ECs (Sorry for no tl;dr):

  • Over 2000 service hours (2152), mostly in music. Co-founder of a music foundation that has helped hundreds of kids in low income neighborhoods. I give classes, do IT website and financial work, serve on the board, and am concertmaster of the most advanced orchestra.
  • Worked extensively within my mom's company. Did quickbooks, excel, website & IT work in addition to handling bulk orders and clients. Officially listed as director of the company on the website.
  • Model UN, Science honors society (Non-Officer)
  • Math honors society (Top 10 school in the nation, was on stats team junior year) (Stats Coach 12th grade)
  • President of Music honors society
  • First chair in school orchestra (concertmaster), have traveled to Washington DC, Orlando, Italy, New York for non school-related trips. First clarinet in band. Disney and New York for school related trips.
  • Have played in the Vatican for an Italian organization centered on world peace and education access for kids with students from at least 30 different countries. Played for the pope in October of sophomore year. Received a blessing from the new pope in addition to playing in several other cathedrals in Milan, Asisi, Turin, and Rome.

My ECs are not well balanced in the slightest and anything besides math, music, and business is not relevant at all. Hopefully the time i’ve put into them does show in my application because i put in thousands of hours of work into making the stuff i do have work.

If Vandy doesn’t meet my financial needs then UF would probably be the alternative since they basically give me a full ride if I get in according to my counselor.

First of all, why middle school? Middle school (unless you took courses for HS credit, and the grades for those don’t even count) doesn’t even count in college admissions. For some reason, at my school, the GPA admit is relatively low for a school of Vandy’s caliber (3.83 UW) but average the test score is astronomically high (~2365 SAT), around the same level as Caltech and MIT admits. Right now, I think your ECs will offset (not by much) your GPA. However, you do have a lot of great hooks. You have a decent shot, but the chances for FA are unknown.

@basedchem Algebra 1, Geometry, Physical science and i forgot the other high school class that I took in which i got BCBB, hence the 2.75

Bump?

If financial aid doesn’t come through, would you still want to go to Vanderbilt?

Consider that before applying ED.

The net price calc has me paying less than 5k a year if i get in. Most top 20 schools give great aid assuming you can get in with the exception of maybe the UCs

Apply to Vanderbilt ED. Have an ED2 school too, among colleges that have excellent financial aid for lower income students. Make sure to apply to the Honors College at UF (LOTS of cool advantages). Considering your EC’s, I’d definitely apply to Holy Cross and Notre Dame.

As for your original question: you’re a very strong contender for admission. However, no one can predict you will get in. So, make sure to have a plan B beside UF - to me, it seems obvious that beside Vandy, you’d be a great applicant to Notre Dame, Holy Cross, and Williams (for the music!) RD, plus of course apply rolling admissions to UF/honors ASAP.*

  • Even if you apply ED to Vandy, you're allowed to apply to UF/honors now (and you should, since scholarship deadlines are coming up). However, if Vandy admits you AND UF admits you too, you have to turn down UF.

Also, i’m top 12% which seems to be really bad because schools move up in rankings by admitting more kids in the top 10% of their class. Also, add NEHS, Self-taught Java and HTML, and tutoring for money to the list. Change 3.86 senior year to 4.0.

Don’t expect this to help much but i really just wanted a reason to bump the thread because I only got 2 actual chances.

Honestly, I’d expect that Vandy would admit you. You’re 1st Gen, URM /and/ you have test scores that are pretty strong. Apply; don’t let anyone in this thread convince you otherwise, because you deserve, and could quite possibly get, a spot in Vandy’s class of 2020.

I literally have the Vandy brochure 2 feet away… hang on…

me: vomits stats

College of Arts+Science: 2,553/22,0667 admitted.
Sorry, FL doesn’t add much diversity, but being Hispanic does. Possible scholarship?
SAT CR, M Middle 50%: 710-780, 720-800
ACT Middle 50%: 32-34
Admit Rate: 11.6%
90.9% in top 10%
Not much mention (read: any) of ECs in the brochure, sorry, but yours are fly
Need-blind apps and 100% of demonstrated financial aid

Dude, you look great for Vandy. I’ll save you a visit and say that it’s beautiful AND has a Mellow Mushroom close by.

Source: I live less than 1/2 an hour away. A rep was at my school and I took a brochure.

Good luck!
