Alright, so I'm wondering about the Arts college. From what I understand, you can get accepted into the college in which you apply, but rejected from the school. Now, if you apply ED, can this happen? I want to go to the design school, but I wouldn't want to go if I only got accepted into the college.
(or are they separate? I'm not sure.)

Thank you!

I’m not sure about the ambiguity between “college” and “school” you are referring to, but maybe this’ll clear some stuff up:

CMU is made up of six “colleges”; if you get accepted to one of them, you are automatically accepted into CMU. So, CMU is different than other schools that have admissions such that you must be accepted to the university first and then you select which department to major. For CMU, you apply directly to what college inside the university you want to major in, and they choose to accept you/deny you. I think this really helps for the College of Fine Arts, because some of their students are extremely talented but do not have, say, the SAT scores that other universities require.

I think the way it might work is you apply ED to a specific college (or two) within the university, and if they accept you, you have to come. However you can probably put down some colleges within the university to be regular decision if you’re not certain about them. So, let’s say you KNOW you want to come to CMU for CS, but you’re not certain about engineering. You could have the application to SCS be for ED and CIT for RD. If you get rejected from SCS for ED, you’d then be considered for CIT later on.

Anyway, I’d just call the admissions office and find out.
