ED and past acceptances - question

This is a question for either past acceptances/current students, or current ED acceptances:

A lot of you guys post your stats and stuff in the results pages, or chances pages, but I was wondering if any of you would be able to offer a more definite breakdown of your transcript/gpa. For instance, did you have absolutely straight A's all four years? Mostly A's with some A- and occasional B+ mixed in? That sort of stuff.

For anyone willing to help, thanks in advance!

I got in ED. I just looked at my transcript. I had one B and one A-, both sophomore year. Everything else was A or A+ and my unweighted is 4.02. I really think though that more B+s and A-s are fine though. If you want, I can tell you the classes I've taken and grades in each one.

I do think though that grades are looked at in the context of your school and course rigor. Sometimes class ranking and the difficulty of your classes can reveal more than GPA.

Precisely. GPA is quite meaningless in a vacuum. People on here post their GPA in chances threads as if it means something, and it doesn't without any context.

I think GPAs are irrelevant when you are comparing from one school to the other. Two from the same school, then it might mean something.

Viva, is your school competitive/difficult?

Also, if you'd be willing to post your class list, I would love to see it :)

Thanks!

I had a fairly low GPA (relatively speaking by what most people post here) by the the time i applied to columbia, something like 3.8-3.85 uw but i took 3 ap classes soph, 5 jr year, and 4 sr year and a few of those i got B's in. wasnt really a big deal i guess...

Is 3.8 UW a low GPA for top colleges!?

Hm, I posted my stuff up but it felt kind of weird. I'll PM you with what I originally put up, soryusen. And no, in my humble opinion, 3.8 is not a low GPA.

again, like people say, it depends on what you take. and i only say its low because so often on these boards 3.9-4.0 is what you normally see in "chances" threads

I see. But regardless of all the 3.9's and 4.0's, a GPA around 3.8 UW is certainly competitive at top schools, right?

Once again, we don't know. If a 3.8 UW is the highest GPA at your school, you would be ranked 1 and that would be very competitive. If a 3.8 UW puts you in the 2nd decile of students, it wouldn't be very competitive at all.

Well, at my school the highest GPA is around 4.2 W, and mine is a 3.97 W, and there are a bunch of kids clustered right around the 10% area. Regardless, I'm right around the top 10-12%. Does that make me competitive, then?

Yet another thread where I feel compelled to mention:

I got in with a 3.3 UW. it took a load of effort to do so, though, involving getting a full-time job to prove i actually had a work ethic and some maturity.

my point is, columbia is looking for a whole lot more than a student who did well in their classes in high school. rather than worrying about a tenth of a point here or there, worry about what kind of person you are, and how to "sell" that to the admissions committee. This is a sales job, after all.
