A deferral from Amherst is especially not as bad. They have a cap on how many students are accepted ED. I don't remember the exact percentage, but there are only so many spots they allow themselves to fill ED. They might have just run out of spots.

Also, one of my friends was there last year and saw that the admissions officers were literally putting gold stars next to the names of deferred students who called and said that Amherst was still their first choice. So that can't hurt. Good luck to everyone :)

Wandii...I completely sympathize with you. Finals studying? It's all sort of swishing around in my brain. Come Tuesday I probably shall do horribly on my finals. Alas.

Ugh...not in the CA mail today? Drats. I was hoping for some miracle.

Hey, Anonymous - Would you recommend I still make a friendly call to the admissions office to boost my standing for this round? It sounds like a great tip on your part.

I'm in Michigan and I did not get my letter today. I stood by the mailbox and the mailman said no news today. He predicts Monday if it was mailed from Amherst on Thursday.

My family has roots in Western Mass...but that doesn't really count. :-P I'm sure some people applied from Western Mass...don't worry about the diversity thing. Diversity comes in many forms, not just ethnic/racial and geographical.

I went up to Amherst in late September for the Diversity Open House. I got an invite over the summer and had to apply (basically a summary of the Common App and a short essay). I got the feeling that the admissions people are working really really hard to diversify socio-economically as well as ethnic/geographical

Hi! I'm currently a freshman at Georgetown University. Last year, I applied early decision to Amherst and was deferred and then rejected in regular decision. For those who have been deferred, I just want to tell you that I definitely understand how devastating it is initially. However in the end I believe everything works out and you end up at the school that is right for you. I'm so happy to be at Georgetown, and would not want to be anywhere else. If you still think that Amherst is the school for you than keep them posted with any extra information that may strengthen your application, and make sure that they know that you are still very interested. However, you should also start exploring your other college options. I found that seeing what awesome opportunities others schools had to offer helped me to get over my disappointment and move on (I'm not saying that Amherst doesn't have great opportunites, because it is a wonderful school.) By April, Georgetown had become my first choice, so when I ironically got both my Gtown letter and Amherst letter on the same day I ripped open my Gtown letter, and didn't even realize for an hour that I recieved my Amherst rejection letter.

Gtown is my number two, and im applying to Amherst early.. i hope to get a letter from them tomorrow. I probably will be bummed if I dont get into Amherst, but writing supplements for other schools made me really excited to go to any of my top 6.
