ED at cornell CHANCES

I LOVE Cornell. I am going to apply early decision, I know it.
I don't think it would be that much of a problem to get in, but what do you think?

White female from a competitive public high school.

GPA - 3.89 unweighted. I had a grade slump, 2 B's my first semester junior year, and 2 B's sophomore year, but got all A's second semester junior year.
I didn't take any APs, but I took some Honors English courses. I didn't take the hardest courseload but I did challenge myself.
I know I'm in the top 20% of my class.

SCORES - 800 writing, 710 math, 660 critical reading - 2170. I'm going to retake it I think.
SAT IIs - French 740, Math I 660, Literature 720. I'm going to retake some of them.
ACT - 31.
No other tests.

HONORS
French Honor Sociey
National Honor Society

EXTRACURRICULARS - JV/Varsity lacrosse 3 years, 10 hrs./wk, 8 wks./yr.
Co-editor of school poetry magazine, 1 hr./wk.
School choir for 3 years, part in Fiddler on the Roof school play, voice lessons, 10 hrs./wk.
Class council 2 years, 1 hr./wk 35 wks/yr.
Peer tutoring 3 yrs, 1-2 hrs./wk, 35 wks./yr
Dance lessons, 1 year, 2 hrs/wk.
Senior citizen, 2 hrs./wk, distributd randomly throughout the school year.

OTHERS - My teacher recomendations are probably going to be great, and my essay will probably be great too.

What are your opinions, early decision at Cornell?

"I don't think it would be that much of a problem to get in, but what do you think?"

i think youre cocky and your post made me sick... btw... i dont think you'll get in...

Err If you KNOW your going to apply, and you KNOW you're in the upper 20th, then shouldn't you KNOW you have a problem getting in?

I meant that I only know that I'm in the top 20 percent, because I'm not in the top 10 percent. So I'm in between there, more towards the 10 percent though.
Which part of my application would not let me get in?

Also, I got a drinking ticket before junior year and was sentenced to 40 hours of community service at the hospital. But I've changed. Will this lessen my chances?

no! colleges love to see kids with MIPs!!! don't worry you are such a good candidate, like no one has your stats or is nealry as confident.

like rock on toolbag

happyone, the blunt truth is that your failure to take the hardest courseload available at your high school is going to hurt you. Cornell cares a great deal about what's on your transcript -- not just your GPA (which is OK but not extraordinary), but also the quality of your high school program.

I'm a parent. I know several high school seniors who are applying to Cornell this fall. Every one of them has taken at least five honors or AP or IB courses every single year in high school. They didn't just take Honors English; they took Honors Everything. Every one of them has already taken some AP courses and will take more of them during senior year. Most have earned high enough scores on AP tests to get credit for those subjects at Cornell.

And in addition to the harder curriculum, these kids have SAT/SAT II scores and extracurricular achievements at least comparable to yours -- in some cases better. And none of them have any disciplinary issues on their records.

These are the people you are competing with.

Do you have a chance of getting into Cornell ED? Sure. Should you be confident that you will have no problem getting in. No. Definitely not.

My suggestion would be for you to apply ED for some place else and not waste it on Cornell. Honestly speaking, even though this may be hurtful, you probably have a very dismal chance of getting in. Prepared to choose some other schools will save you from breaking your heart and maybe even future.

^^wha?

True, it's not safe for you to assume that you won't have a problem getting in, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't do Cornell ED. If you have your heart set on Cornell, it would make sense to apply ED; otherwise, you might sort of regret it and think "what if?" As the above posters have said, you're up against a lot of stronger candidates, so it'll probably take some effort and a great deal of luck. Improving your SAT scores will maximize your chances, and you can show adcoms that you've learned and grown from your mistakes (in reference to your drinking ticket) to sort of minimize the damage. Courseload/GPA/rank, unfortunately, might hurt you, but I guess there isn't much that you can do...

I'm also thinking about Cornell ED. Good luck.

i agree that it is totally unacceptable that you didnt take a single AP class. at my high school (best in a big state) the only people i knew who didnt take a single AP class went to local bad state schools. i cant beleive you think you even have a chance. your scores are ok but the admissions officers will be wondering why you didnt take hard classes. i know for a fact that cornell even more than other competitive schools stresses a hard course load in high school above anytihg else (direct quote from an ad. officer). not only do they want to see at least some APs but the MOST RIGOROUS COURSELOAD POSSIBLE

"I didn't take any APs, but I took some Honors English courses."

How can someone who took ZERO AP courses and a couple honor courses be so friggin cocky?!??!!?!? The ONLY thing that puts u in competition in ur application is ur SATs...I'll be honest. But that is a bad thing because it shows ur smart but then slacked off in school by taking easy courses. You insulted the entire forum by acting so cocky and that is why noone is taking you seriously. You need to actually mature before you think about having an active conversation with someone and learn to earn respect. Damn...

amen figgy

I don't see the problem with being confident. People on this site sometimes forget that you don't need to speak 4 languages, have a 2400, a 36, a 4.0, 15 5's, 8 x 800 SAT IIs, a sub 4:00 mile in track, 1st place in Intel Science Fair, 4 digit volunteer hours, and a hospital named after you for curing pancreatic cancer and saving the seals all while being a hard-of-hearing Inuit to get into community college.

And what is ur opinion on the chances this person's chances then doppler? This person took a couple of honors courses throughout all of highschool and no AP classes. Chance away...

Cornell makes it very clear that it gives preference for ED kids, unlike some schools who hem and haw and talk about the applicant pool being more competitive early and that they do not give preference despite their acceptance numbers. So if you are sure that Cornell is your top choice, talk to your counselor about applying early. The only issue I see in going early for you is your grades slumps. It is often recommended that kids who have that issue apply regular admission, and get a sterling 1st semester senior year transcript. Colleges may defer you because they want to make sure you are not slumping downward, particularly with junior year grades that show a downward trend. One thing you can ask your highschool counselor is if your first quarter grades can be sent ASAP to bolster your app.
I also suggest you find another school or two to apply EA or rolling. It really is a punch in the stomach to get a rejection or deferral without a little sweetener. It still hurts, but you have some solace that way.

first off- on college confidential i think we all get kind of absorbed in the "2400 SAT 4.5 w, 4.0 uw gpa, 20 million APs, i found the cure to cancer" kind of stats.
but yet i assume you KNOW or kind of realized (you only have 3 posts) that the caliber of people here is high.

secondly- because of those amazing CCers out there, why would you be so cocky? even if you HAD an amazing transcript and resume, why would you be so cocky? i have read from people who are amazing and they dont flaunt it. if you expect that cornell is going to look at you and say "O MAN. this one is DEFINATELY in." which it seems you are- then i would take a good deep breath and read some of the other chances threads. then i would slap myself in the face and sign up for a freaking AP course.

get over it. NO ONE is going to have a very easy chance getting in THESE days...

especially with NO ap classes

And a couple honors english classes...

happyone you really make me sick

Your SAT scores are not that great either. "Only" 1370/1600 M+CR.
