Thanks for all the advice!

ED is clearly an easier admit than the EA round. Many students who appear qualified end up being deferred in EA. if Elon is your first choice AND if needing financial aid is not a factor, I do recommend ED. But be sure it is what you want, don’t apply ED just to increase your chances of acceptance.

My son was accepted ED last year, and it was the right choice for him. Plus, it was nice to be done December 1, and he had a very low stress senior year of hs as a result. But, we had visited Elon several times and he was quite positive it was his first choice college.

Thanks for your advice, because financial aid is a factor would you recommend trying for early action?

Two suggestions. First, use the net price calculator on the Elon website and for any other schools you plan to apply to in order to get an estimate of the financial aid award you might receive. Second, unless the calculator estimate from Elon is great and would meet your needs, EA is probably the.way to go, so that you can compare awards from various schools.

We relied in the net price calculator. We were satisfied with that estimate, and based on that, son did apply ED. His FA award was identical to the projected award estimate, so it worked out fine, but this may not always be the case.

The rule of thumb is Never apply ED to ANY SCHOOL unless you know that you can afford to attend without FA.

Elon is much better than most in that give you a clue from the beginning what you “might” expect in FA and their cost of attendance is already 10k - 15K lower than comparable schools by design… But I still would not apply ED if you need to be sure of the FA package before you make your decision.

ED applicants at Elon are a lot like rockvillemom’s Son - Students who KNOW that Elon is their #1 school no matter what, are well qualified, and want to make a strong statement. It is not that way at many schools.

Okay, thank you both so much!

Unlike many other colleges - including colleges that take the Common Application - Elon’s ED agreement does NOT make any mention of letting you out of that agreement for financial aid reasons. While they clearly cannot force you to attend, the understanding is that if you apply ED and are accepted, you WILL go to Elon - no excuses, financial or otherwise.

I do not believe it is coincidental that Elon places this statement below the “Honor Code” section on their application. I would think long and hard about applying ED to Elon if there was an amount of Financial Aid that would be necessary for me to attend.
