Hey everyone. I finally figured out how to post- (I want to thank everyone who told me how- I actually had to re-register.) I’ve applied to Bowdoin ED I and am wondering what you people think my chances are. I was acutually a bit reluctant to apply early since your chances don’t increase too much ( the school says about 30 percent get accepted) but I love the school.
Here are my stats
Rank: 11/520 (top 2%)
Average: 94.41 weighted average: 99.86
All Honors/APs 5 APS
senior year schedule- AP English Lit, AP Calc, AP Bio, AP Polysci, Romance Philology (Independent study course which concerns the evolution of language), Art
AP spanish didn’t fit in my schedule and the school actually said that lack of language senior year can actually hurt you in admissions- was anyone else who was accepted in this situation?)
EC’s:
AIDS/HIV prevention education group
Student teacher of spanish to elementary school
Varsity Tennis
Founder and President of a Club
National Honor Society
Curriculum coordinator of student teaching program
Piano Recitals at Nursing Home
Summer study abroad in Spain
Student ambassador in Australia
I haven’t excelled nationally in my ec’s but am quite devoted to all of them. Does anyone know if Bowdoin is looking for someone who has really achieved at a high level in their activities? Do you think my activies are sufficient?
Awards:
National English Academy Award
High school achievement awards in history, science, and spanish
National Honor Roll
Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors
My essays are good and quite unique (I assume) and my recs seem good.
I’ve interviewed and I thought it went well.
I’m not submitting Standardized Tests and everyone says that won’t hurt me. I’m just wondering if you may need to compensate for this anywhere else in your application.
Oh, and is anyone else as anxious as I am about the notification for ED I?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Well, it seems to me that your chances are pretty good, and I wish you luck. It will be great to hear who was accepted and who our future classmates will be.

It seems to me there are variables other than stats: How many kids from your school have applied? What is their gender? How about your state/region? Are you a legacy? (I am - mother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather) Also - did you go for an interview? It generally counts for about 5 "points."

My stats look a lot like yours, though I have a lot more sports in my EC package. I did not submit my SAT scores. I did not feel like they would help.
I live in Rhode Island and nobody else from my high school is applying to Bowdoin.

That said, I know I am "competing" with a lot of other kids who are a lot like me, so I take nothing for granted. I have all my other apps ready to send off if I get bad news on the 15th.

Good luck everyone!

Molly

Molly, that's a really intense legacy situation haha. Good luck to everyone! I wish I could have applied ED too, but I'll be applying RD. Good luck, the anxiety is killing me, as I'm sure it is for you all too!

Wow Molly- That's quite a legacy. I'd say between that and your grades and other stats you'll get in. Unfortunatley, I really don't have much of that extra stuff you mentioned going for me. I'm from New York, which definitely isn't geographically diverse and have no family members who attended. I had an interview which I think went well. No one from my school is applying to Bowdoin, and I thought that's an advantage- but people tell me that I'm competing with the nation- which I guess is true. Well, I hope you and I get in!- isn't waiting is so excrutiating?!!!

Just wondering those of you who have been accepted to Bowdoin....was your acceptance letter "fat" or "thin." I guess it might also make a difference is a financial aid package is part of the app.

Thanks!

Molly

3 more days I think...
My package (2 years ago) came with a black folder inside of it (9 x 12) with an embossed golden bowdoin sun. Not a regular envelope size.

3 years ago, i got just a normal-sized, thin envelope - but they did notify me through email about a week before i actually got it.

also, note that this was EDII, i didn't have fin.aid, and i got a "bigger" package later with a certificate and stuff like that in it.

Well, as I mentioned above in the post I applied ED and Bowdoin really doesn't make it clear when you find out. I've been searching this site and have found people who seemed highly qualified get rejected ED from the school. These people were generally around the the top 10 or 15 percent of their class. I am in the top 2 percent (I was fortunate enough to be in a big high school class) and am wondering if that percentile is more helpful. Does anyone know?

My mom communicated with Bowdoin today. They expect ED 1 decisions to be mailed this week but they are still going over some cases. They told my mom they do not email people with acceptance news except in international cases, so not sure about folks who say they got emails in this regard. Perhaps a thing of the past?

Best to all!

Molly

Hey everyone, I applied early to Bowdoin and I'm not going to lie, this waiting is starting to kill me. I love how vague Bowdoin is about when we will find out. I really want to get in!!

I heard they mailed yesterday or today from my friend.. don't know if its true though. I'm not applying ED just thought i'd try to clear some of the waiting issues up.

I talked to the coach of the hockey team yesterday the letters were sent out today... goodluck everyone

I heard from Bowdoin a while ago that the letters will be mailed out the 19th. But everyone keeps hearing different things. The anxiety is really kicking in- so hopefully we'll all find out as soon as possible. Good luck to all!

I'm freaking dying...
Bowdoin is by and large my number one school, I lived in Maine for ten years and have pretty much dreamed about it for my entire life.
Let me know when you guys hear.
Does geographic location have anything to do with the day that you will receive your letter? I live in Texas now, so I figure that might play into receiving the letter later than others.
Good luck to all of you, hopefully I will see you next year.

Wow- you've known about Bowdoin for a long time. I'm sure it would be awesome to return to your homeland. And I just found out about Bowdoin a year ago and can't stand waiting. You must be dying. Good luck!

I am hoping it is true that the letters have been mailed. Its high anxiety all around. Good luck everyone!

I remember distinctly that my child got the acceptance email the very day Bowdoin said they were coming out. The acceptance was not in the subject line, and we could not see the message til we scrolled down. I remember how we just saw the first word, "Congratulations!" and didn't read any further until we were done cheering!
As I recall, the snail mail came a day or two later.

Good luck to all!

What were your child's stats like Voronwe?

Has anyone found out anything else about the mailing date from the admissions office? It seems unlikely, but maybe one of us will here tomorrow.

Around #10 in class, 1440 SATs (old), etc....but Bowdoin is NOT stats oriented. I don't want to identify my child in case he/she doesn't want me to, but suffice it to say he/she did some pretty cool things and had essays that the staff have mentioned to us!

I wish you luck - I truly do. It is an awesome, awesome place. I know my child would not trade it for Williams, Amherst, Dartmouth, or anywhere else.....
