I am a junior this year and I'm already anticipating next year's admission process to be even more competitive.

I cannot decide between applying ED to Brown (PLME) or applying to EA MIT. I really love MIT, but they only have EA. I wanted to apply somewhere ED to increase my chances of being accepted at a competitive school.

Here are my questions:
Does applying ED Brown PLME make a huge difference compared to applying RD?
Should I apply ED to a high reach school or to a more realistic reach school (which is why JHU is in there)?
Should I apply ED at all (for a sense of security) if I want a chance at MIT?

Please tell me what your thoughts are...Thanks to all who post!

You can apply to both EA @ MIT and ED somewhere else, as long as it isn't restricted EA, which I don't believe it is.

as for whether you should go ED at brown of JHU, it should be whichever one you like more

But ED at Brown or JHU is binding right? So there is still a slight miniscule chance that I could get into ED at one school and EA at MIT...

more feedback please?

ED is binding. (JHU has one exception - if you apply to the BME program ED and are accepted to the regular school but NOT BME, it's no longer binding.) EA is usually non-binding. Since it is non-binding, it may be more competitive than ED. Just to confuse things further, a few schools (Bucknell) have two binding ED rounds (I suspect round 2 is to attract students denied ED by their #1 choice).

Check the policies at each school (they're easy to find), talk with your guidance counselors (hopefully they have a clue), visit the schools, talk with admissions officers, alumni, older friends/relatives attending your schools of interest, don't stress out over applications next year (hah!) or worry your life is over if you don't get into MIT/Brown/JHU. This year was hyper-competitive and I doubt next year will be much better.

JHU (or MIT) may not be the best place if you're planning to be pre-med...
different story if you are interested in BME or biomedical research
