ED chance class of '10

-1310 old SAT's in December ... i'll take the new one in June or October
-uw 4.0 GPA ( 10 APs and all honors... )
-Rank 1 (out of 543 people)
- recommendations from past companies i have worked at ... and not common places that 'average' kids work at
- will have ~80 community service hours
- president // vp // any position in a student government and nhs and other clubs...
- LOR from Principal and serving member in School Advisory Council
- Started business (and starting a number shortly once I pick up on a concept..) and planning on incorporating the day I turn 18 (which is the legal age) ... i think this will be one of my key points, other than tthe aforementioned items because it is so uncommon. i am sure admissions will be very impressed because I plan to send in a CD with a bunch of neat stuff and "experiments" i've done.

i have some other stuff...

been to UVa before, i love the campus, it's great... always thought about going there, and I need to make a decision soon because applications are coming out this summer...

think I should apply for UVa early decision? do I have a shot?

Yeah you got a great shot I think, better than me. Where do you live? I'm on a Student Advisory Council and I thought ours was one of only a few in VA.

im based in florida

amnesia are you hispanic?

for an out of state applicant, admission is very difficult. my daughter had a 1480 sat, three satII's of 750 or higher, national merit finalist, one of the top students in her class, seven AP courses, and many other intangibles. she applied to uva and was waitlisted. she decided not to pursue the waitlist.

yep... but my flag says "M" for Mexican American... not "H"

Are you Hispanic? That's cool. I like meeting people from other Spanish countries and pretty much everywhere...

here is my new score breakdown:

verbal: 710
math: 690
writing: 680

basically a 1400... + writing = 2080

us history = 700
bio m = 680

i hope these scores are fine.

amnesia: you're in

i was accepted out of state and you surpassed my sat scores by a small margin, so i'd say you are a def. acceptance.

wow you have some pretty good stats, UVA also looks at alot of extracurricular things and if you have done some volunteer work in the area in which your major is focused...i applied regular decision and got it... i also believe applying ED is alot more competitive than regular decision

If anything, UVAchick, ED is less competitive than RD. The acceptance rate is roughly the same as the RD rate, and the applicant pool is weaker.

Er, why not just go to UF for almost nothing?

Are you serious?

Of course I'm serious. How in the world could someone come to the conclusion that ED is more competitive than RD? Or, that applying ED would put one at a relative disadvantage?

"Rank 1 (out of 543 people)" + Business + Mexican=admission

i guess it depends to where you are applying because at Duke, I was definatley told that applying ED was more competitive

but based on your stats i def still think that you would get in either way, but just to make it clear to you and CAVALIER302 who seems to be highly misinformed about Early Decision and Regular Decision...i will help you out:
Here is the website that i got this quote from for validation:

http://www.mycollegeguide.org/guru/12.phtml

"I’ve heard that it is slightly easier to get into a top-notch school if you apply under an early admissions plan. Is this true for most schools?
I wouldn’t say it was “slightly easier” to get into a top-notch school early decision. I’d say it was “slightly tougher” since you’re probably not being compare to the total applicant pool but a select portion of it. At any rate, as for the average school, I’d say “no” again. However, I do think applying early (not necessarily early decision) can enhance your chances since some colleges have a rolling admissions policy, that is, they don’t wait to a certain date and admit the entire class, but rather admit as applications are received. This is usually the less competitive schools. If they run out of places and you apply late, it’s your loss. "

Believe me i have been at the same place you are, worrying about schools and applications and early decisions and such and i would not want to give anyone the "wrong information" - ie CAVALIER302

I just want to help you out and if you have anymore questions you can always contact me

uvachick, that is misleading advice and your conclusions are counterintuitive to what would normally be assumed, given the premises. Applying ED tells the school that you're absolutely committed and will attend no matter what...how is that bad?? If you get deferred, you still get another look in the RD round.

Yes, ED at Princeton may be as tough as RD due to a more self-selected applicant pool, but believe me, high-end applicants DO NOT apply ED at UVA. With my numbers, as an instate student, I would have never considered it, and neither would the vast majority of students in my situation. I used my ED card at Princeton, where I was deferred and ultimately waitlisted.

If you're committed to UVA, apply early. I'll give you two things

first, a legit website that shows UVA's ED acceptance rate:

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/webex/earlydec_brief.php

second, my firm assurance that the ED pool does not have the high-end talent that the RD pool has. I knew plenty of "what the hell" applicants (900ish SATs and 2.5-3.0ish GPAs) who all brought the acceptance rate down.

i disagree that you are a lock admit from out of state unless you are from an under represented state or a less competitive state. i previously posted my daughter's stats and they are clearly superior to your stats and she was waitlisted at uva. unfortunately for her she was applying from westchester county in new york which is an extremely competitive area.

i never said ED was bad...it is more competitive and this may be based differently depending on the university. I also applied ED and it was to Duke University. I was deffered to RD and then waitlisted also and in my ED letter, they said that ED was more competitive...either way amnesia you have pretty good stats and you are ranked one thats really good. i think that you have a good chance of getting in!
