Hooks:
Not sure if these are hooks but my aunt and cousin went to NU. Also the Assistant Director of Admissions came to visit my school but I was unable to attend the meeting and e-mailed her instead. She e-mailed me back and said she looked forward to seeing my application (most likely just a formality, but maybe she'll remember my name).

I'll be applying to Weinberg.

I don’t know anything, but I would probably say no. SAT/ACT are only average, AP scores are not that high, ec’s are not that special(better than mine though), GPA isn’t that high.

Why bother responding if you self-admittedly “don’t know anything?”

would imagine that since you attend a top 20 public school on Long Island, your guidance office would have a really good idea of where you stand; that’s why they are paid the big bucks…

How do you know that? Anyway, my guidance counselor says I have a decent shot at getting in but “doesn’t really know NU that well” so I figured I’d ask here.

^^didn’t you post that on another thread?; plus not too difficult to figure out since you took a course at SUNY Old Westbury?

Might have, but just because it’s on the island doesn’t mean it’s top 20. Anyway, do you want to weigh in?

If you go to Jericho, I would imagine that you are fine…for UMich as well…

Great Neck North and South too, as well as Roslyn/Shreiber/ too…

assuming you are a full pay student, your scores/EC’s look good…

Cold Spring Harbor.

not as familiar with CSH but I would imagine that your GPA is prob top 10-15%, course rigor similar…unless you have grade inflation…curious that your guidance counselor is not familiar with Northwestern admissions coming from such a competitive school…

do you have Naviance? that way you could see what it took from previous CSH applicants to the schools you are asking about.

I’ve got Naviance but there is only one person who applied ED. He got in but his GPA was 4.13. 9/33 people got accepted RD lowest GPA being 3.62, lowest SAT 1310, lowest ACT 31.

where do your stats fall within the scattergram? and is it weighted or unweighted GPA for the plots?

if you have an RD acceptance with a 3.62 weighted GPA you should be fine…if it’s an unweighted RD acceptance and you are applying ED, you should also be fine…but hard to tell what the ED applicant pool will look like this year…

last thing: legacy for NU only counts for ED; did you do an alumni interview?

Your “stats” are within range…however, given that your W is as low as it is…spend time honing your essays.

Well my GPA has been steadily rising. I’m just gonna post everything:

Spanish 4 Honors: A-

Next question, should I apply here ED or RD? I want to go to Cornell equally.

It seems like the SAT isnt too bad, but your ACT was anchored down by your science. I would recommend retaking the ACT. Getting at least a 28 or 29 on the science would bump your score up a good two or three points. Those extra points will be really important and worth retaking

GPA is average, and ECs are not anything that stands out. Chances are basically impossible to get into NU without leadership too.

Looks like class rigor is slowly increasing as you go on in high school, which is good for colleges to look at.

In the end, I think that NU is a bit of a reach, but not too much. just brush up on the EC’s and score well on the AP’s your taking, and you have a pretty decent shot.

Apply ED only if you have a true preference.

I don’t have a preference so I want to pick the school I’m more likely to get into.

Aunts and cousins don’t count for legacy unless the family has made significant donations. No one can tell you accurately between NU and Cornell where you are more likely to be admitted unless there is more personal information you have not disclosed. As always visit both and decide which you like better. Then keep in mind that at both of these schools applying ED does give you a slight advantage over RD unlike the many of the other top schools.

Does admissions at ED time know about an applicant’s financial worthiness/need?

If admission does know about your financial neediness, how does this impact the admissions decision? If you are full pay, does that five you some extra admissions points? Does your app get demerits to the extent that you are financial needy?
