Hi I was wondering my chances at Cornell

3.55 UW GPA at a very competitive high school (avg SAT at my school is close to 1350)
SAT I's: 790 Verbal, 760 Math, 750 Writing (2300)
SAT II's: 700 Math IC, 660 Physics
APs: English Composition, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, English Literature
ECs: Preparatory Program at a music school on weekends 8-12 grade, 3 years varsity Lacrosse, 2 years varsity ski team, National Merit Scholar Honorable Mention for PSAT, Area- All State on my instrument from 10-12 grade, 4 years of Band.
Good Essay and Solid Recommendations (I assume).
However, I finished on a slightly downward trend and junior year was all Bs to B+s.
Thanks for your help.

Do very well senior year and you could be ok. I applied early to CAS as a single legacy with a 3.34/3.60 UW/W. I had 740/740 SATI and 780W/770IIC/650Lit SATII. I came from a very competitive public HS: over 30 of our graduating seniors are going to the ivy league--class size: 267.

BTW i'm White, Jewish...

I had a solid 3.73/4.23 UW/W for first quarter of senior year which Cornell saw, and was National Merit Commended Scholar like yourself.

ECs were 4 years in the internationally award winning jazz band, started a ski club junior year, started a jazz combo club senior year, and mentored kids on trumpet after school once a week.

Sports-wise I had won State Champ in Taekwondo and played rec.-league baseball through HS.

I had a really excellent essay, a fair recommendation from one teacher (he was smart so it was probably pretty good), and a very good recommendation from another (I had her as a sophomore for accelerated (same as honors) algebra II and got a C+, I think, and then did fabulously in her Calc. AB class senior year, so she wrote about how I matured).

It all fit together nicely. So I think you definitely have a chance and should apply, preferrably early if it's your top choice.

I have the opposite problem. I do well in school... 3.8 uw, but my scores are only a 1350 (SAT I) ... I dunno you think I should retake?

your already meet the SAT range for mossy ivy leagues, i suggest you play up your other strenghts now, like your EC and write a solid essay. most people dont realize that there really isnt a difference between somone's 1400 and another's 1530. at this level of scores the admission officers usually look at other credentials of the students not solely the SAT (if you think you can do better retake)

theres a significant difference between 1400 and 1530...

but the fundamental of what sexyyetibeast says seems correct. everyone is a good student at this level...plau up what makes you a unique good student.

So, if you had to guess, what percentage is my chance of getting in?

38.792 geez. you can't really percent one's chances. It's more like "very good" "good" "fair" "possible" and "unlikely."

For you I'd say "fair"

Little update: I just visited the school and I really liked it. It was by far the most impressive school I've seen and I'm leaning towards it for ED. Any other input on my chances would be greatly appreciated.

the SAT II's will hurt when put together w/ the UW GPA. The EC's dont grab me that much, but the band will certainly help. ED is doable...I believe about 40% are accepted, and you are an above applicant. But it truly could go either way. Good luck!

44% or '08; 41% for '09 to be specific.

Thanks a lot for the help and the input. Any more would be appreciated.
