ED chances at Rice

Hi, everyone. I am applying to Rice under Early Decision. Just wanted to see what others thought of my chances of being admitted.

I am a white male at a public, urban high school (3,000+ students) in Houston.

Class rank: 1/684
GPA: 3.94 (4.0 scale, weighted)

SAT: 2110 (650 CR, 660 M, 800 W)
SAT Sub. Tests: 800 US History, 680 Spanish, 660 Math II
ACT: 32 (36 E, 30 M, 32 R, 30 S)
APs: 5 USH, 4 Calc AB, 4 Eng Lang; taking Calc BC, US Gov, Microecon, Physics B, and Eng Lit this year

Note: I am taking the Nov SAT.

I have volunteered over 300 hours at a local nature park, working primarily as a horticultural aide with native and non-native carnivorous plants but also at public events highlighting nature and history. I have received the Bronze and Silver Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for these efforts.

I have been treasurer, section leader, and drum major in my school's band.

I have participated in National History Day for 6 years and advanced to the national contest twice. I received the Outstanding State Entry Award for Texas in 2011 and 3rd Place in the Individual Documentary Category in 2012.

I am vice president of my school's chapter of the National Honor Society.

I am a member of my school's "Dream Team." We work to help promote a college-going culture at school and advise other students on the college application/admission process.

I have won various foreign language contests for French and advanced to various musical contests in Texas.

I serve on my district's Student Advisory Committee. Student representatives from the district's high schools meet with the superintendent to discuss issues in schools, the district, and the community.

This year, I am helping middle school students prepare National History Day projects.

My sister currently attends Rice and I have a considerable amount of familiarity with the school.

Thank you all in advance for your help!

Impressive chances my man.

10 char bump

Highly impressive chances. You seem very competitive.

10 char bump

Your extracurriculars are strong, and show that you wish to follow a very socially active career in the future. Your 1# rank pretty much negates your relatively low M+CR. Overall, great chance, especially if you apply to the right major with the right essay.

Thanks for your insight. I am applying to the School of Humanities, planning to major in linguistics and hopefully minor in history or ecology/evolutionary biology (I may double-major). I like to think my essays are pretty strong–they certainly describe me and my experiences.

Thanks again!

You can call yourself an Owl. I mean you have SAT well within the range and an awesome GPA, not to mention being #1!! Nevertheless, your ECs show you are active in school too and have won some awards too. Hope your letters and essays are stellar! Because then you are a shoe in. Having your sis attend Rice will make you preferable too. I guess the only negative is being from TX as 50% of applicants are from there. Also, maybe you could raise your SAT to be even more awesome? (That’s my prob too :frowning: ) anyways what is your major? Also PLEASE chance me!!
