ED chances for AAP?

I was wondering what my chances would be if I ED to Cornell AAP. My GPA and SAT might not be too high, but i thought i'd ask anyway.

● Chinese American Male – Born and raised in New York City
● Low income family – Parents are divorced, and my mom works as a school bus escort.
● First generation
● Technically Bilingual. English as a second language, though it’s the main language I speak now.
● Major: Architecture

GPA: 90/100
UW: 3.5/4.0
School does not weight.
My freshman grades are the ones that are really dragging me down (75 and 80 in Spanish compared to a 90 and 97 sophomore year for example) and my grades are steadily improving

Classes: AP World History, AP Calculus AB. Also took Advanced CAD and Architecture courses. My architecture&tech classes overall avg is a 99.

But I’m taking
Architecture, AP Calculus AB, Shakespearean Literature, Environmental Studies, and Economics right now.

U.S. Govt, Advanced Acting, Ballroom dancing, Oceanology/Geology/Meterology, Architecture, AP Calc AB, and possibly computer graphic design next term.

APs:
● AP World History: 5
● AP Calculus AB: To be taken in may.

Class Size/School: ~800. Very competitive and prestigious high school: Stuyvesant High School, one of the top ranked schools in the states and the top ranked in New York. (we’re excluded from newsweek’s rankings due to our performance, but US News & World Report has ranked us.)

Rank: School does not rank.

SAT: CR: 690 M: 760 W: 730 – Total 2180
SAT II: Math IIC - 780

ECs:
● Worked for ~100 hours for the United Chinese Association of Brooklyn as a volunteer/communications intern – Had to help organize community events, voter registration, etc.
● Also did the NYC Aids Walk 2009 – Received 10 hours for that
● Wall Street Dragons Dragonboat Racing team – our boats placed 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th in the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York Corporate Youth Invitationals.
● A.C.E. Mentoring Program (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering): Led final presentation for my team and also closed it off.
● President and Founder of The Architecture Club
● President and Founder of Affinity Graphic Design Club
● Director of Art and Design for the Visual|The Modern Love non-profit organization/design club
● Director of Art and Design for the CreativRevolution Advertising/Multimedia design club
● Planning on Founding The Mahjong Club this year
● I help with tutoring the technical drawing/advanced CAD kids in my school.

Jobs & Hobbies:
● Freelance web and digital design – I do all sorts of design for commission.
● Clerical work for Blue Ocean Food Trading LLC.
● I play handball (one wall, not the European team handball version) almost every day
● I do a lot of digital art on my free time, but I’ve been experimenting with traditional mediums as well – Mask Making, Acrylic painting, Sumi e painting, Chinese Ink and Wash and Shan Shui painting, etc.
● I also administrate/moderate a few websites.

Travel: extremely well traveled:
China, 20+ different states (Entire east coast from MA. down to FL., KY., TN., NV., AZ., CA., HI.), England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Bermuda, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada

Planning on traveling to even more countries during senior year

Recs/Essays/Portfolio: - Recs should be awesome. Essays hopefully awesome.
Portfolio:
8-10 Digital Art Pieces
8 Traditional Art Pieces – Mask, Sumi E and acrylic paintings, sketches, drawings. Possibly a sculpture if I find time to do one before the ED deadline.

Dude, are you serious:Those are like one-day events

  • Also did the NYC Aids Walk 2009 – Received 10 hours for that
    ● Wall Street Dragons Dragonboat Racing team – our boats placed 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th in the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York Corporate Youth Invitationals.

And easy spitting one club into four lmao. I doubt the admission officers are going to be super impressed by those superficial titles. wow, you must be real leader, mr. president(s).
● President and Founder of The Architecture Club
● President and Founder of Affinity Graphic Design Club
● Director of Art and Design for the Visual|The Modern Love non-profit organization/design club
● Director of Art and Design for the CreativRevolution Advertising/Multimedia design club

p.s. GPA is really low and test score not that great. So… a slim chance

I’ll agree that the aidswalk thing was a one day event (so i’ll remove that), but dragonboating?
sorry dude, but dragonboating was all summer, practices on the marina, test runs at the lake, etc.
that’s like saying a being a soccer player is only on the match days.

and the other two clubs aren’t clubs i created, so i really didn’t split them into multiple clubs. i just joined the other design clubs and moved up in rank. :T the only clubs i founded were the arch club and the graphic design club.

And yeah, thats why i wasn’t so sure. my soph/junior/senior gpas are 3.5/3.7/should be ~3.8, so thats the increasing trend.

(and if anyone was wondering why i travel so often even though i’m from a low income family; my dad still takes us both to travel)

Well considering we only have 2 people who Ed’s AAP last year and the one with 91 avg got in rather than 95, it really depends on your portfolio/Essays/EC/fit after 90 avg for stuy for almost all Cornell schools. I was at AIDS walk too and know people who were in the ACE program. hm

Thanks. No unnecessary attacks there, unlike a certain poster above you.

Updated Info:

Portfolio:
11 Digital Art Pieces, 6 Traditional Art, 3 Photography - Total 20

GPA trend - 84.33,86 freshman, 90,90 sophomore, 92,92 junior. Rising pretty fast.

Essays are really good according to the english teachers at stuy.

Sending in my portfolio tomorrow, and my interview essay monday.

I wouldn’t worry too much - it’ll depend on your pieces.
When I had my interview with cleary, she said they pretty much don’t look at freshman year grades.

I wish they did that for soph year - my GPA trend is 91,89.5,94.5

Recs/Essays/Portfolio: - Awesome recs, same goes for essays hopefully.
Portfolio: Pretty strong imo, and unusual in the amount of digital art from the other portfolios I’ve seen.
12 Digital Art Pieces (Two photomanipulations, Three terragens, two fractals, two websites, two print designs [one business card design, one book cover]) – STRONGEST part of my portfolio.
5 Traditional Art Pieces – (Two freehand sketches, one line & color study, one sculpture, one mask)
3 Photographs – (two color, one black & white)

Fit: A.C.E mentoring program – returning participant for architecture, President of Architecture Club, extremely high grades for architecture, drafting and CAD courses, School’s architecture teacher knows me extremely well and wrote my rec.

I think you should pretty much disregard what you hear on CC. AAP is just too much of a different college compared to the rest of Cornell. For one, admissions rates are much lower for AAP, and two, you have a portfolio.
From what I’ve heard from current students, Cornell AAP puts more emphasis on your portfolio/essays/interview essay(I wish they were doing actual interviews this year!) Some people got in with pretty weak stats, so don’t worry about your gpa too much. Really, if what I hear about AAP is right, what matters is the portfolio and essays-since we can’t see any of that on CC, it’s pretty futile trying to get anything valid here.So yeah, unfortunately, us AAP applicants aren’t going to get much out of putting up chance requests on CC.

But best of luck! If your portfolio is as good as you make it out to be, I don’t think you should have any trouble!

Yeah, i submitted my interview essay at 11:55 because i was getting a bunch of people to critique it… i wish they had done actual interviews, i think it would have worked out more to my favor in that case.

And yep, good luck to you too; hope to see you there next year :)

yeah, i’m applying for architecture too!

it freaks me out how subjective it is. and i did something a little different with my interview which could be a total hit or miss :</p>

yeah, thats also why i wanted an interview; you can usually gauge the interviewer’s impression of you and see their emotions… with an essay, you have no idea.

hope to see you there next year with us ;)

it’d be hilarious if we were all there first day and shouted out, “IS ANYONE IN HERE ARCTIC92?! LETSTALKCOLLEGE? AKMEECHEEN?”

ah, getting ahead of myself :P

mid-december seems so far away… hahaha

Well, AAP only accepts ~100 kids so it shouldn’t be too hard to find each other if we all get in :P
