ED Chances for Vassar College

Hi guys, I am a gap year applicant. Initially I was unhappy with my college selection and combined with my mother’s declining health due to a disease I decided that I should take the following year off and re-apply to colleges. My senior year was also my best year academically so I felt I’d be put at a better shot for college admissions now. I am interested in Biology and pre-medical studies however also maintain a strong interest in International Relations. I also realized I need to be close to home because of my mom’s situation and frankly many of the colleges I applied to and were accepted to such as Emory, and UMiami were too far and also weren’t the right fit. I have found Vassar to be the right fit and the flexible curriculum truly appeals to me.

These are my stats:
Ethnicity: Asian (Pakistani)
Gender: Male
UW GPA: 3.45 (3.9 GPA Senior Year, sharp improvement)
ACT: 33 C
33 E,
28 M,
36 R,
33 S
IB Diploma

Junior/Senior Courseload (IB Diploma):
IBH Biology
IBH Global Politics
IBH History
IBS Lang and Lit
IBS Math Studies
IBS Spanish

Recommendation letters from Biology teacher who saw my sharp improvement as a student in senior year and English teacher who I consistently performed very well with.

Extracurriculars:

  • Started an organization which is working with NGO’s in Pakistan to build schools (put a lot of time into this - it’s my main EC)
  • Shadowed a Lawyer and a Doctor
  • School Basketball team
  • Former Vice President of Chess Club
  • Executive position in Diversity Awareness
  • Former head of schools Accounting and Finance Club
  • Volunteered at a school in my area
  • Project Manager of Schools Photography club
  • Participant in a cultural exchange program

There are more, but the one I’m very focussed on is my organization since it means a lot to me. Overall, how would you all fancy my chances to Vassar??

ur good

@xfewds hey thanks for your reply! so you think I stand a good chance for ED then?

Anyone else? Im so nervous lol

I think you’re a strong applicant. Still, you should have an array of other schools to apply to, of course. There are several other LACs that offer a similar package to Vassar’s… although Vassar is pretty special.

Vassar is a reach for everyone. With your stats I think you’ve got a 50/50 shot. Do you want to use your ED for a 50% chance or is there another school where you are in the top 25%?

Male applicants at Vassar have a significantly better chance than females.
From last year’s CDS - 55% of male applicants were accepted. It’s possible that the ED number is even higher. For females the admit rate was 15%. Overall rate is 27%.
Your ACT score of 33 falls at the 75 percentile mark. I’d say you have an excellent chance of acceptance

^I missed the gender part. Being male, your chances are considerably higher.

@NEPatsGirl @wisteria100 @ytippiz thanks for your replies! Wow so you guys think I have that good of a chance? I thought my GPA was a tad bit low (despite the upward trend). Does being a male really help that much or is the male applicant pool more self-selective? Meaning is there a difference between male and female applicants in terms of quality of applications at Vassar.

Would you say Vassar is a Match, High Match, Low Reach or Reach?

Solid match is my bet.

I think you have a good shot!

It’s going to be a challenge overcoming your relatively low GPA. Being a male applicant will not overcome your grade history. Vassar is a reach for you. Best shot is to convince admissions committee that you are a late bloomer.
