trueblue, Statistically you have all the right stuff to get into Williams. The competition, however, is fierce so you'll need to craft your application in an attention-getting manner to differentiate yourself from all the other bright, accomplished, Eastcoast, white, middleclass kids that will also be under consideration. (For the last two attributes, you didn't specify; I'm assuming you are white and middle class.)

Orchestra is a good EC as Williams needs musicians. Think about how to best present your talent and experience in a separate music resume. Contact Williams music department. Include a supplemental tape. (Follow admissions' instructions for this.) Maybe add a recommendation from someone involved with music, plus any music related commendations or awards. Make sure that Williams understands that you intend to continue playing your instrument in college.

Ditto for your journalistic endeavors.

Put a lot of energy into your essays. Think about what you can bring to the Williams table and make sure that your potential contributions are highlighted in your essays.

I believe that Williams adcoms read every word of the application material. They're looking for kids who will both fit in to the campus community and who can offer a unique or insightful perspective. This is somewhat contradictory: they want kids who will be happy at Williams and thus fit into a certain "type" or profile, but they also want unusual and interesting kids who will contribute to intellectual diversity in the classroom and informally.

ED is strong commitment and Williams likes demonstrated interest. If you haven't visited, do so, overnight if you can.

Thanks a lot for your help.
