ED Chances?

i am a first generation Korean male, in junior year, PA
2nd in my family to go to college

3.65 gpa, on a standard 4.0 scale, it would be about a 3.45 i think
my school scale goes up to 4.6, but it is actually impossible to get above a 4.3
3.65 of 4.6 is equivalent to a 3.45 of 4.0 (my school is really messed up... difference between a- and b+ is .7)
weighted scale goes 4.6 a+, 4.4 a, 4.2 a-, 3.5 b+, 3.3 b, 3.1 b-
i go to a public school in pennsylvania, one of the best in the state, highest rate of students that go off to college, and we always rank 1-3 in all standardized tests

around 1980-2060 SATI

school doesnt rank

i take all honors credits, except art major, but i am on my way to take ap studio art as a senior
orchestra 4 years secretary
tennis 4 years
volunteer at hospital 100+ hrs
physics olympics captain
participitant in school news paper
took a summer course at yale u.
CEO of PFEW team (pennsylvania free enterprise week, business camp)
winter track 2 years
student ambassador club
relay for life participant
model congress 2 years
mock trial 2 years

recommendations from good teachers, 1 from the CEO of PFEW, another from my company advisor who used to be a financial advisor at a big company,
im pretty good with essays

i plan to apply to 7-9 of the following, but vanderbilt or emory will be ED
Vanderbilt U.
Emory U.
USC
UNC
Macalester College
Whitman College
Bucknell U
GW U.
Occidental College
Pepperdine U.
U. Wisconsin- Mad.

also, are there any other schools you reccomend thats a "match" school for me

Keep your grades up, and score as high as possibly you can on the SAT's. You have a great chance, especially for ED!

great chance?? uh...

ur stats are low for vandy, applying ED will help

Your ec's are decent. Your SAT scores, however, are another story. Basically, they're low for Vandy. Same with your GPA. Applying early decision will help you significantly. If you write a fantastic essay, you have a fairly good shot to get in early. Regular decision would be much more difficult, and I would venture to say regular decision may not be friendly to you at Vandy. Applying early is your best shot. Good luck-write awesome essays!

I'd also suggest submitting only teacher-written recommendations. You need to sell your intangibles a bit more than others given your scores. A business recommendation is less likely to accomplish this.

how can you apply early decision for two schools....?

"i plan to apply to 7-9 of the following, but vanderbilt or emory will be ED"

OR

ok .

any more opinions?

any more opinions?

does it improve my chacnes at any of the schools if i got a 31 on the act

bump...............

I don't know much about the ACT, but I'm almost positive a 31 on the ACT is better than a 1980 on the SAT... what does 1980-2060 mean? Did you get one the first time, the other a second time?

your gpa is a little low. I don't see anything wrong with your sat scores. You're applying ED and you're asian, so that's a huge plus! I think you have a good chance :)

does being asian mean anything at vandy?

Vandy has a lower percentage of asians, and all schools want their student body to be diverse. So even though they won't say so, I think being asian does mean SOMEthing to vandy.

I'm kind of in a bind because of my financial situation, but at the same time I'd like to give myself the best shot of getting into a top-notch school. I scored ok on the SAT (740 V, 670 M 620 W- apparently CB thinks I can read but not write) and I've taken the typical honors/AP courseload at a competitive public school in the Boston area. Ideally I'd like to wait for RD so I could pick the best financial package, but I'm not sure if I'd as good a shot if I didn't apply ED2. Anyone who's in/has been in a similar situation, or anyone else who wouldnt mind sharing their opinion?

dipset, you mentioned you are from Boston. I understand that Vanderbilt is trying to recruit more students from the northeast, so you may be attractive from a geographical standpoint. Given that your stats seem to be in range, you should have a good chance of getting in, in my opinion.

Wait for RD. Believe me you are more than qualified.
