ED Class of 2019 Nepal

I made this thread for all of us who are going to apply early. I am in confusion whether I should apply to my dream school or just take ED application as a strategy to get a boost for acceptance to another somewhat easier-to-get-into school. Anyways, I figured some of us are in dilemmas like this, so lets make a common thread to post all our queries and share info.

Hi Bro…! My advice will be Not to apply in ED-1 especially, in your Dream-school. From what I’ve heard, most colleges have high ED acceptance rate is because most of the student who get accepted basically will have got accepted before they apply due to great athletics abilities. Their high-school coach and College coach talk about student and make the student apply early. This for the college shows great ED acceptance rate but in reality… But I will say you should apply in ED-1 in those college where you know you’d not get, but if accepted you will attain… And save your dream school for ED2 if the college have 1.

By the way timro-dream-college kun hoo??

@DoNJoN‌ I’m going to say you’re mistaken. If you’ve got a dream school, apply ED. Show that you’re interested in their school. That’s one of the key things! Yes, the athletes usually apply ED and attend the school, but so do a lot of other students who are really interested. Schools want students who want to be there, and ED is an awesome opportunity to show that you’re interested in the school. Besides, why risk not attending a school that’s your dream? That just doesn’t make sense on a fundamental level.

"But I will say you should apply in ED-1 in those college where you know you’d not get, but if accepted you will attain… " ----What are you talking about? That makes no sense at all! First, if there’s a school you’d like to attend, apply. Don’t think that you won’t get in. You won’t know until you try. You’ll be left with nothing but regret. Second, if you’re accepted in this ED school, and then you get into your dream school too, then where will you go? Choosing a top school just because it’s top isn’t a good idea. Choose a school because you want to go there!

Hi @sixstrings
May be I didn’t made my self clear :smile: . I will elaborate it… I’m saying that you should apply in ED-2 in your dream school If your dream school offer one. E.g. My dream school is haverford but at first apply to Caltech with EA as admin plan. I i got accepted in caltech then congrats to me first!!!
I will be more than happy to turn down haverford for CalTeCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC… & I guess almost all will do the same…

If not then go-for your DReAm Schooll

But, most-probably I will not get in then I have the dream school # haverford … Now I can review you entire application, ask admin officer of caltech for any defects … Hence,I will have higher probability of getting Inn… my dream school.

Also now in this ED-2 those athletic M_Fkrs will have no influence on my chance .

May this holds true for me because my SAT will arrive around late November, i can’t risk my dream school without insight of my SAT score .

Well this is a great technique I have developed… May it help you… or if you still don’t agree then you have your loss…I tried to help my NEpali Daju-vai. :blush: …

Hy, and which college are you guys&galz going for… with ED plan… make sure they give aid…
also apply to as many as you can…

Best of luck to all… May all Nepali be accepted in there dream school

@DoNJoN‌ My dream school is an ivy, so no ED II. I am not even sure if I have a good chance of getting in there. But, Dartmouth has been my dream ever since I started the college application process. I am basically worried if I apply ED to Dartmouth and get rejected, then I won’t have much chance of getting in anywhere in the regular round. @sixstringsrocker‌ Is applying to my dream school worth the risk, especially since I have a huge financial need( like most other Nepalis, no doubt)? @DoNJoN‌ I am thinking about choosing where to apply only after seeing my October SAT score. It will arrive in October 28th and I hope I have enough time to apply by the November 1 deadline.

And another thing, How do colleges calculate the EFC for Nepali students? Do they take your home into account while calculating it?

@DoNJoN‌

if Haverford is your dream school, then why risk not going to Haverford? Seems like you really want to go to Caltech, and not Haverford. That makes Caltech your dream school.

It’s unlikely that they’ll tell you why exactly didn’t you get in. Most common response: “You were a really strong candidate, but there were others who were stronger.” If they do tell you something you could change, like not taking the SAT II, or low TOEFL score, or something similar - it’s too late to change that anyways. The result from Caltech won’t affect your probability of acceptance at Haverford.

Watch your language. You have no reason to curse at them. A college needs all kinds of students. May be they need athletes more than they need you.

May be you already know this, but I just wanted to be sure. You can only apply to 1 ED college, and if they accept you, you cannot attend any other school (unless you can’t afford the said ED school).

@cauldroncastle‌

YES! If Dartmouth is your dream school, then you should apply ED to Dartmouth. Do everything you can, to make your application stronger. Showing interest in a school is one of the most important things, and certainly one of the best ways to do that is to apply ED - making a commitment that if you get accepted, you’d definitely attend. I’ll send you a PM.

@sixstringsrocker‌ Thank you so much for the PM. I needed that motivation.

@sixstringsrocker is right, right that @cauldroncastle‌ you should apply &Best of luck man. Its just that I’ve different perception of all this I just want to make sure that I dont ruin my chances of getting in my dream college without knowing my stats.

& tnx di I can see that you have been helping many students, still I have something in mind I cannot share, a promise I must keep …Hope all of applicants figure it out by reading above and researching…

Best of luck to you cauldroncastel… & r u planning to apply in any other colleges ?

Lets share a list…These colleges are on top of my list

Princeton
Caltech

Grinnell
Williams…
Carniige-Mellon

What are your Stats…
My GPA is 3.93, SAT I guess will cross 2050.Common- App essay = almost prepared.
Share yours too…

Again Best of luk
:smiley: :smiley:

My Stats:

TOEFL score = 112

Best of luck to everyone who is applying!!

@donjon If I were you I wouldn’t apply to those 8 colleges at all.Do your research bro.The fact that Carniige mellon is in your list shows how randomly you are choosing your colleges.No offense.but its true…You have to be very very careful while applying colleges.And remember there is a subtle difference between confidence and rationality.I dont mean that you shoudn’t aim high but be rational and make your judgment wisely.Best of luck!!

Thanks man @feynman10‌
I really appreciate your concern. You are absolutely correct about the subtlety, and yes I do have 8 back up schools.
Thanks man I wont apply to these all. May-be 2 or 3.
…

@cauldroncastle‌

I was wondering whether you got called for an interview or not. I also applied to Dartmouth in ED, but I still haven’t got any interview requests yet.

Woahh,Lots of people are applying to Dartmouth(from Nepal) this year. and The reason for this might be Dartmouth’s highest ED acceptance among the Ivy’s and the generous aid it provides. Otherwise who would go to an isolated place like Dartmouth. P.S. No offense to anyone. It’s just an opinion.!!

@IvyForAll‌ You are saying “lots”, could you specify the number of people you know who applied to Dartmouth? And I applied to Dartmouth because of its focus on undergraduate teaching and its small size. Plus not having to write a “Why this college?” essay was a good thing. @pretyyflower‌ No, I haven’t got any requests either.

6 of my friends did ED at Dartmouth. Application pool’s tough this time. Anyways, good luck to you,man.!!

every year people say application pool’s tough that given year. I was talking to some people in admissions, and they say even though number of applicants have increased, number of qualified applicants hasn’t increased that much. The quality of students haven’t increased that significantly. So, nothing to worry about.

@IvyForAll‌ 6??? Man, that’s a hell of a lot of people. You’re making me nervous. Thanks and good luck to you. @sixstringsrocker‌ Thanks!! Hope it works out!!
