ED class of 2022 discussion

I haven’t see any thread about ED so far, so I create this thread as a start.

Hi @edsmart , my daughter is planning on applying ED to Wash U. Are we missing another thread?

Hey, I am also applying as well. I don’t think there is another thread for class of 2022

Ok, then let’s go with it, and if you find a different thread, let me know, and I’ll do the same.

What do you plan on selecting as your major?

I am planning to major in mathematics, thanks

Hi-parent of a WashU Class of 2021 student who was accepted ED. If anyone wants advice on the process let me know. The important thing is to show demonstrated interest (college fairs, contacting regional rep, visits, and setting up interview) as well as good grades/test scores/ECs.

Thanks for the advice, @Hamturtle!!!

@edsmart, if you want to start a separate thread with your stats, I can review it.

Hello @Hamurtle , thanks for the input. My D will be applying ED. She began seriously considering ED while she was at their pre-college Pre-Med Institute this summer. She loved everything about the school and the summer program. She did have an interview before she came home. She has been to an info. session at her hs with the regional rep. and I’ve been to 1 in our area also. The only problem she is having lately is that she has not heard back from her rep. She reached out after she returned and then again about something, but no response. Perhaps it’s a new rep. this year? But wouldn’t you think there would be a system in place to make sure emails are received?

@Winky1 which state are you in? I’m from California.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the lack of a response from the regional rep yet. They tend to be pretty busy this time of the year.

The interview is not necessary a deciding factor, but if your daughter got a good vibe after the interview, that’s a positive sign. My son visited WashU August of last year and after the interview, he decided to ED. He was seriously considering BU and Tufts but after the interview, he was set. He did attend an information session for WashU in 10th grade so the school was on his radar.

If anyone has questions about what the facilities are like, let me know. WashU is known for the quality of the food and Tempurpedic mattresses in the dorms.

We are in PA @Hamurtle. She did have a good vibe after her interview. It was with a student admissions rep., though, and I was hoping she’d get an admissions staff member. But she felt it went well, nonetheless.

My daughter likes BU a lot too, and is working on her application because she is applying for the Trustees Scholarship and everything needs to be in by Dec. 1st. It’s a hefty application with the Trustees and the Honors College essay to do as well. It’s one of those schools that she wants to be thorough about just in case she were to get deferred or rejected ED from Wash U. It’s the only really labor intensive application for a school that she really likes that has to be in that early. So much for her to work on.

I was wondering how you felt the financial aid package was being that your son was accepted Early Decision. I know they guarantee to meet demonstrated need, but did that come out really looking like you thought it would? I did run the net price calculator, and it’s not looking any better or worse than most of my daughter’s other schools. It comes in where it’s supposed to. Just curious.

Also, did your son apply for any of the merit scholarships? I am thinking if a student is accepted ED they may be taking themselves out of serious competitor status for those scholarships. What incentive does Wash U (or any school) have to give to a student already accepted and bound to attend? See what I mean? I am thinking my D will lessen her chances for the scholarships if she applies ED and is accepted.

@Winky1 we didn’t qualify for aid. And you’re right that ED does lessen the chances for getting a merit scholarship. Most of the merit scholarships generally go to RD candidates since WashU is competing with other Top 20 colleges.

Son applied but didn’t get any. He’s thinking about doing something over the summer (internships or jobs). The school does encourage freshmen to get a head start on internships/research.

If I recall the BU app, there is also an application for the Killichand Honors College. My son was also filling out the apps as well as working on the Tufts application when he got into WashU.

For pre-med students, there is a 2 semester medical prep class that freshmen can enroll in which is pretty interesting. The first semester covers the ins and outs of applying for medical school. The second semsester has students shadowing doctors at the ER at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. My son is considering pre-med as well and is taking both classes.

Also if your daughter gets an email/snail mail letter from a professor, it’s worth replying back.

@edsmart Math at WashU is kind of dicey. Most of the professors know the subject, but some undergrad classes are taught at a graduate level.

For some reason, Calculus 3 is supposed to be easier than Calculus 2. My son was placed into Calculus 3 based on his BC scores and he mentioned that the first week of classes were like Trig-Precalc.

For math majors there is a 2 semester Calculus 3 class that emphasises proofs more than the regular Calculus 3 class.

@Hamurtle , when in the process might a student receive an email or letter from a professor?

Son got a letter about a month after submitting his application.

Ok, good to know @Hamurtle , thanks.

@Hamturtle, thanks for input!, but I am into Wash u for their chess club!

@hamurtle Do you know anything about the CS or accounting programs?

@validation my son is in Arts and Sciences so unfortunately I’m not familiar with the Engineering or Olin Business School.

WashU is putting in a lot of money into building new Engineering facilities. Everything is expected to be completed in 2 years, and they want to make their programs first rate.

do you think the interview was helpful? my son has visited campus twice - once for tour/inf session, once for academic exploration days in the summer. he has also attended local admission visits and has been in email communication with his regional rep. do you think an interview would help? he plans to apply ED. Also, any thoughts on ECs?
